The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts wishes to honor the memory of the exceptional painter Philip Pearlstein.

In an era when abstraction continued to dominate, Pearlstein was one of the first artists to adopt a figurative style in the 1960s. By the 1970s he and fellow artists working with figurative realism became known as the New Realists. Pearlstein exemplified this movement with his portraits of friends and neighbors that utilized shallow, flattened space, and a simplified color palette. His highly realistic imagery was not meant to flatter, but instead, he brought a dispassionate eye to his subject, painting, as he stated, "only that which meets his eye...allowing the subject to speak for itself."

Pearlstein did not reference photographs for his works; instead, he worked with live models in his studio, creating images that focus on the details of his sitters in often surprising positions and unusual vantage points. This is visible in two works from the MMFA’s permanent collection: Two Reclining Nudes (1971), an example of the nudes he is best known for, and Ellen in Tutu, (1972) where he portrayed his model almost sliding off the edge of her seat while awkwardly holding her left arm. Pearlstein unbalanced the image further by cropping her right foot from the image.

07/19/2022

Claes Oldenburg (January 28, 1929–July 18, 2022) was an artist of tremendous significance in mid-20th-century American art. Beginning in the late 1950s, he championed an emerging genre, later to be known as Pop Art, that eventually supplanted Abstract Expressionism as the most influential style of its era. Today he is best known for public sculpture installations around the U.S and overseas that depict everyday objects—clothes pins, baseball bats, or a garden trowel, for example—enlarged to monumental scale.

Representing Oldenburg in the MMFA collection is "Hats, Vesuvius," a color lithograph on paper created by the artist and the printers at Landfall Press in Chicago in 1973. This print relates to a monumental sculpture, "Hat in Three Stages of Landing," 1982, located in Sherwood Park, Salinas, California. In this sculpture, Oldenburg, along with his wife and artistic collaborator Coosje van Bruggen (born Netherlands, 1942–2009), played with the idea of a hat tossed about by the wind and rolling through the park. In both the sculpture and the lithographic print, Oldenburg used a cowboy hat to explore ideas about the sculpture’s site adjacent to a rodeo ring and the Western masculinity symbolized by that arena. In the print, Oldenburg reinforces the hat’s form and perhaps equates imagery of an active volcano with a masculine trait of raw, explosive power.

Our Spring Showcase is coming soon in April 2023!!
Pre-pandemic I won the Woman of Achievement award at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.💛It was a huge honor to be recognized...and a wake up call from deep inside.

I sat there honored, inspired, and empty at the same darn time. Over the years, I’ve definitely achieved a lot...yet I still struggled a lot. But, I woke up having the courage to live my life the way I desire to live my life and not the way others expected me to. I decided to keep giving unabashedly, but unapologetically take care of me too. And if the energy or the dollars don’t make sense at my big age then, chile, it’s something she simply cannot do. Lol
ACHI, I thank you for this honor and most of all—I thank you for the BREAKTHROUGH. ☺️💫🙌🏾 😌
This Fall WMA Supporter level members and above were invited to join museum staff to explore the cultural offerings of Montgomery, Al.
