Alabama's Coat of Arms.
The coat-of-arms consists of a shield on which appears the emblems of the five governments that have held sovereignty over Alabama. The flags of Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederacy are bound by the flag and shield of the United States. This shield is supported on either side by bald eagles, symbolic of courage.

PROSPERITY FOLLOWS DEVELOPMENT OF RESOURCES, AGRICULTURE, COMMERCE, AND INDUSTRY, 1874-1930.

In decades after the Civil War, Alabama used its rich iron and coals deposits to build a thriving industry. Birmingham’s iron blast furnaces rivaled those of northern states. But agriculture continued as the main source of income for most Alabamians until well into the 20th century.

ALABAMA'S CAPITOL WAS THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. THREE MONTHS LATER THE CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT MOVED TO RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.

Have you seen the news? The state has its very own COOKIE! Named the Yellowhammer, this sweet treat represents the state with its ingredients. Fourth-grader Mary Claire Cooke of Montgomery created the recipe for a class assignment. Gov. Kay Ivey recognized the cookie officially at the end of May.

WEALTH AND LEISURE PRODUCE THE GOLDEN PERIOD OF ANTEBELLUM LIFE IN ALABAMA 1840-1860.
Cotton brought great riches to Alabama in the last two decades before the Civil War. This was the era that later gave rise to the romantic plantation legend that was at full tide when the murals were painted.

FRENCH ESTABLISHING FIRST WHITE COLONY IN ALABAMA UNDER IBERVILLE AND BIENVILLE, MOBILE, 1702-1711.
THE FRENCH WERE THE FIRST TO COLONIZE THE AREA AROUND MOBILE BAY. ENGLISH AND SPANISH COLONIZERS SUCEEDED THEM. BY 1813, THE CITY OF MOBILE AND THE SURRONDING TERRITORY CAME UNDER THE AMERICAN FLAG.
