Here’s a fun and easy craft you can complete in just 5 minutes! Just kidding, the adobe buildings in our park took many months to accomplish and lots of skill to create.

The Pacific House is an adobe brick building built in 1847. Adobe bricks are composed of 4 main ingredients: dirt, sand, straw, and water. Once the adobe mixture is combined, it is placed in a mold and left in the sun to dry for 30 days. Then, they can be stacked and plastered over to protect the adobe from weather conditions like rain and fog.

Building an adobe definitely takes longer than 5 minutes, but these bricks are a great example of using the resources around you to create buildings and homes!

Have you seen this video in the Pacific House Museum?

This demonstration film of Ohlone basketry has been on display in this museum for almost 20 years! The full video depicts master Ohlone basketweaver Linda Yamane, Tribal Community Leader & Cultural Advisor of the Rumsen Ohlone Tribal Community, as she sources local plants to craft a basket. 🌿🌾

Today, Yamane’s art and influence are just as vital across Monterey and beyond. Her work has spanned the arts, Rumsen language preservation and much more. Yamane makes traditional style dance regalia and has even reconstructed Ohlone dances. She currently has baskets on display at the de Young Museum and the Oakland Museum!

Want to learn more? Linda will be exhibiting at Christmas in the Adobes on December 12th and 13th. Meet Linda to learn about her art, process and Tribal Community in the Pacific House Museum from 5-9pm on both nights. We hope to see you there!
