Monroe County Museum System We fuel and cultivate our visitors’ curiosity through the exploration of our Monroe County History.

We house one of the largest collections of artifacts relating to Southeast Michigan. Only a small percentage of the total collection can be exhibited at one time; many exhibits are changed each year. We are a unit of the County of Monroe, Michigan, governed by the County of Monroe, Michigan Board of Commissioners, and generously funded by the citizens of Monroe County. In all seriousness, we're having a grape time getting ready for a sweet jam session tomorrow.

Come to Territorial Park on the River Raisin from 10 AM - 4 PM to learn how people of yesteryear made preserves to last the whole year, without Mason jars or gulf wax!

Probably the most important part of our living history program at the Monroe County Fair takes place inside. Presenters discuss domestic life in an 1860s farmstead and talk local history with visitors - all while they prepare the food that fuels the staff throughout the week. Presenters use recipes, techniques, and cookware from the Civil War era to provide an immersive and educational history experience to all who stop in.

At the Monroe County Fair this week? Stop by and see our 1796: Our First Flag pop-up exhibit.

This fifteen-star, fifteen-stripe flag is a recreation of the first American flag to fly over Michigan in 1796.

An American Semiquincentennial project spearheaded by the Monroe County Museum, this 9’ x 13’ flag was completely hand sewn by various members of the local historical community and museum visitors.

After your visit, stop by our booth in the South Exhibit Building and grab some limited edition flag swag.
