Many of us have forced branches in the spring (think Forsythia), but did you know that Magnolia branches will bloom indoors for you? Our garden staff has been doing some winter pruning and one of the trees to get a trim was Magnolia soulangeana (Saucer Magnolia). A few of us here thought the buds and branches were attractive and placed some in vases. Much to our delight, they have decided to put on a show.

Happy early spring!

LOOK WHAT'S POPPING UP AT LADEW!

The daffodils and naked ladies are getting ready for Opening Day at Ladew Gardens.

And so should you. Only 40 more days until we open for the season.

So put it on your calendar--April 1st--and be sure to pop on over to Ladew.

“WHYYYYY are you waking me?! I’m still sleeping!”

Our gardeners found a surprise today while cleaning a submerged pot in the Iris Garden pond. This cranky snapping turtle was relocated to the marshy vernal pool section of the quarry pond. Upon release it immediately began digging itself back into the mud to fall back into brumation.

If you happen to find a snapping turtle in your garden and you have to move it, remember to watch your fingers, but do not pick it up by the tail as it is a part of its spine and could cause it harm. Grab the very back of the shell and keep it low to the ground to prevent injury should you need to drop him or her.

Have you reduced the size of your lawn? Tell us about it! 🌾🌱🐝🦋

Why We Need To Reduce Our Lawns In the last century we began to import European turf grasses, and ever since they have been main component of the American yard. But these grasses are foreign to our climate and habitat, and to

How to Take Part in the Great Backyard Bird Count

Counting is Caring...
Join the Great Backyard Bird Count!

The 23rd Annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) begins on Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, and continues through Monday, February 17. And when the latest science shows that two-thirds of North American birds are threatened by climate change, there is no better time to get involved.

The GBBC is a free, fun, and family-friendly way to support bird conservation. Here’s how it works: spend as little as 15 minutes on one or more days of the count tallying birds in your community, and then submit your lists online. The data collected by volunteers from around the world powers conservation initiatives and helps us better understand how climate change will impact the birds we all love.

All it takes is 15 minutes to make a difference. Keep reading to learn how to participate in this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count.

It’s free, it’s fun, and it helps scientific research. Here's how to participate in this annual February tradition that spans the globe.

Happy Valentine's week to everyone! This post is a shout out to my mama. Thanks for being my original valentine.

Also, I have a Tully tip for you... Instead of spending money on flowers that won't last very long and which often cost more than the price tag, give someone you love a gift that lasts all year long with a membership to Ladew!

"The majority of flowers sold in the U.S. each year are imported, with most grown thousands of miles away. Between the chemicals needed to preserve the flowers, the carbon footprint required to fly them to your market, and the plastics used in wrapping, those flowers aren’t smelling quite as sweet. It’s estimated that we’ll spend about $2 billion dollars on flowers this Valentine’s Day." - Earth Day Network

IT'S NATIONAL BIRD FEEDING MONTH!

Winter is a great time to give our feathered friends a helping hand with some extra bird seed or some shelter from the cold.

Our large dovecotes at Ladew aren't just beautiful garden adornments. They provide shelter to nesting birds during frigid weather.

When you're getting your garden ready this spring, think about adding a bird feeder or a dovecote to it and give nature a helping hand.

JUST 60 DAYS UNTIL OPENING DAY

Ladew Gardens is getting in shape for the new season.

It takes a lot of hard work and planning to keep the gardens in tip-top shape.

That's why our gardeners are busy removing dead branches and leaves to make way for sunshine and new growth.

So stay tuned.

It won't be long before new life is popping up all over at Ladew.

What do Harvey Ladew and Edgar Allan Poe have in common?

Both called Maryland home for a time—and both left behind invaluable treasures that continue to enhance our world, even centuries later.

Today marks the 175th anniversary of one of those treasures.
175 years ago today, the “The Raven”, by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in the New York Evening Mirror.

Today it still remains one of the most famous poems ever written.

It's National Daisy Day!

Did you know that the name Daisy comes from an Old English word that means "day's eye?"

What better name could there be for a flower that closes her petals at night--like a person closes their eyes to sleep and opens them again at first light.

While you aren't likely to see any daisies in the formal gardens at Ladew, you can still appreciate their natural beauty.

Happy National Daisy Day!

Captain Conservation here. I am so proud of Baltimore City and the other counties of Maryland for banning plastic bags!

According to the US EPA, Americans use more than 380 billion plastic bags and wraps each year. It takes 12 million barrels of oil to produce this many bags. Worldwide, as many as one trillion plastic bags are used each year. This equates to 100 million barrels of oil!

Many of these bags look like jelly fish to my sea turtle cousins and they gobble them up. Many animals also get tangled in this mess. In any case, plastic (in general) harms or even kills wildlife! So, BRAVO Marylanders! This is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, the entire state will follow your lead! #tullytuesday #captainconservation #ladewgardens #ladewtopiarygardens

Does anyone have 2-3 extra tickets for tomorrow?
Now appearing in Middleburg Life magazine:
I had a lovely time on my visit to Ladew Gardens last week. I visited the butterfly house and the surrounding area and I took several photos of some very beautiful butterflies. Here is a photo of a Painted Lady Butterfly.
Definitely NOT wheelchair friendly! We were not the only one there this past weekend that had trouble pushing one around. We even informed them NOT to go down the hill. Grass was too high and too many bumpy stones to try to push on. Rocks were too much on the hill, where you had trouble pushing down or up. We had to help him walk up some of the hill, just to get to an area where you could attempt to push. Extremely hard to do! Other area, we had to drag him backwards to get through.
A cute moment of curiosity in the garden today :)
