Our hearts ache as we find ourselves in the midst of mass protests against racial injustice and a global pandemic that disproportionately impacts people of color. We stand in solidarity with those seeking justice. We value and are committed to cultural diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility.

Ladew is essential, now more than ever, as a place of peace, calm, and reflection. Everyone is welcome at Ladew Topiary Gardens... we are everybody’s garden.

The Essential Workers of the New York Botanical Garden

This behind-the-scenes look at the New York Botanical Garden is much like what happens behind-the-scenes here at Ladew. Our team of dedicated gardeners continues to work tirelessly, making everything beautiful so that when you are able to visit again you'll be greeted by our glorious gardens that you know and love.

The grounds are closed to the public, but a team of horticulturists are misting the orchids and doing their rounds at Daffodil Hill.

“It’s a hot one today! Luckily, I have a nice wading pool with a fountain to cool down. Box turtles, like all reptiles, are exothermic. This means I can’t regulate my body temperature without help. If I’m too cold, I’ll bask in the sun. If I’m too hot, I’ll cool off in water, find shade, or bury myself in the cool soil. Humans are endothermic. You sweat when you are hot and shiver when you are cold.

Here’s a good way to remember this: Exothermic (think 'exit' - I regulate my temperature from outside sources.) Endothermic (think inside - you regulate your temperature from inside your body.)

Thanks for coming to my 'Tully Talk'. Happy Tully Tuesday! Enjoy the sunshine!"

Nature is the ultimate recycler... humans not so much.

Buying less, not wasting, reusing, and recycling are critical to keeping our environment healthy.

It can be hard to keep track of what can be recycled, and what can't. Here is a handy guide to Single-Stream Recycling from the Hartford County Office of Recycling. Click below for an easy to read guide...

Yesterday we celebrated World Bee Day... but every day we are thankful for the work that bees and other pollinators do! Check out this wonderful study (an oldie but a goodie) that points to the best plants to use in your garden to support these tiny heroes.

Project Goal: Evaluate native plant species and their cultivars for their attractiveness to pollinators and their suitability for homeowner and agricultural use.

CONGRATULATIONS to the talented Laura Amussen... Ladew's 2020 artist-in-residence who has just been named a 2020 Baker Artist Award Winner in the Interdisciplinary Arts category! We are excited to showcase her work at Ladew this year!

Employing an interdisciplinary approach that often includes large-scale site-specific installations, intimate sculptures, mixed media works, videos, projections, photographs, and performances, Laura's practice is that of a visual storyteller.

You'll be in for a treat when you see the artworks she creates at Ladew.

Green Heron Visits the Quarry Pond at Ladew

This "Wildlife Wednesday" is a real treat! Our trail camera caught a Green Heron (Butorides virescens) up close and personal while a Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) drake watched on.

We often see the Mallards and believe the pair comes back every year. They have even been caught nesting in the Iris Garden's topiary junk boat. However, it's not often that we get a good look at a Green Heron.

Green Herons are one of the world’s few tool-using bird species. It often creates fishing lures with bread crusts, insects, and feathers, dropping them on the surface of the water to entice small fish.

Maryland is the breeding range for this migratory bird. The oldest Green Heron on record was at least 7 years, 11 months old when it was found in Mexico in 1979. It had been banded in Oklahoma in 1971.

Here is a picture taken last Spring of your beautiful wisteria. I sure miss going there this Spring.
You have an amazing garden... Leslie Stafford Maroun remember how beautiful it was.
Emily, Your letter was beautiful, and so inspiring.
Does anyone have 2-3 extra tickets for tomorrow?
Does anyone have tickets for tonight they want to sell? Looking for 2 adults and a child under 2 (not sure if he needs a ticket).
Now appearing in Middleburg Life magazine:
I had a lovely time on my visit to Ladew Gardens last week. I visited the butterfly house and the surrounding area and I took several photos of some very beautiful butterflies. Here is a photo of a Painted Lady Butterfly.
Definitely NOT wheelchair friendly! We were not the only one there this past weekend that had trouble pushing one around. We even informed them NOT to go down the hill. Grass was too high and too many bumpy stones to try to push on. Rocks were too much on the hill, where you had trouble pushing down or up. We had to help him walk up some of the hill, just to get to an area where you could attempt to push. Extremely hard to do! Other area, we had to drag him backwards to get through.
A cute moment of curiosity in the garden today :)
A gorgeous Butterfly sitting on a sign
Damaris Cianci, haven't been there yet..it's on my list for late summer/fall..are you interested? It's in Monkton,Md..
I like to visit Ladew several times a year.
