Portrait of Marie Stevens, Oil on canvas by Isabel Cartright.
Marie and her husband Dan Stevens (Fog Keeper 1890-1902, Lighthouse Keeper 1902-1919) were important figures in the artistic history of Monhegan Island. They were prominent members of the community during the period when the Monhegan Art Colony was established, and became friends with many of the artists who were working and living on the island. Numerous photos and reports attest to the mutual regard between the Stevenses and resident artists. And the Stevens’ interest was not only in the individual artists, but also in their art: Dan and Marie are the first known art collectors on Monhegan.
