A little history on our iconic truck...

1947 Central Fire Truck arrived in Moberly, MO on September 25, 1947. The cost of this truck was $7985.00 dollars. The first run of the new fire engine was made at 2:05pm Saturday afternoon September 29th, 1947 to put out a fire in bales of alfalfa at the alfalfa mill in the City Ice and Fuel Building .

This pumper truck played a large role in fighting many historic fires in Moberly during the 50's and 60's. Some of the fires this truck was used in over the many years of service were Temple Stevens store, the old ice house 100 W. Fulton Street in 1965, The down town fires, Forney Furniture Store in 1963, TG and Y dime store in 1966 and the tragic Randolph Tavern fire in 1968.

It seems this truck was reliable and may have been the number one truck until January 3rd, 1961. At this time the City purchased a GMC aerial ladder truck. The aerial ladder was then moved into station number one and the Old Central Engine would become the number two truck. Extensive damage was done to the aerial ladder truck while fighting the October 1966 TG & Y fire when a wall collapsed on it . This left Moberly with the old Central fire truck as the only one in its fleet. The City of Mexico loaned Moberly a fire truck until the aerial could be repaired.

The truck now enjoys a comfortable retirement in the Firehouse Design Studio in Jefferson City.

First Catholic Church -Newspaper article. Unknown sources.

The history of the Roman Catholic Church in Moberly dates from 1870 , Catholic education has been available to children here since 1877.

It was but four years after the first lot sale, Sept 27 1866 that the Rev. Fr. McKenna of blessed memory built the first Catholic church here at the corner of Ault and Farror streets.

It was during Father McKenna's pastorate in 1877, that the first parochial school eas established, the Loretto Academy at Ault and Farror, still in operated- but now as St. Mary's School now-by the sisters of Loretto. Old records revealed that Sister Phillipi was the first sister superior at the School.

The history of St. John's Church now located at 201 South Williams street dates from those times. Father McKenna served here until ill health forced his retirement in 1888. In 1887 young Father O'Donahue was sent here as his assistant and shortly after ward Father Dempsey came here to serve until the years following Father McKenna's death April 22 1892.

He is buried at St. Mary's cemetery and a shaft marks his grave there today.

Father Dempsey was succeeded by Father Ryan, who served the parish for 18 years. he was succeeded in turn by Father P.J. Carney under whos direction the present cathedral like St. Johns was built. The building was erected at a cost of $75000.

The story of the laying of the corner stone of the building was written by Father Carney and published in the a parish Monthly publication in October 1912. The article reads

" Saturday was a red letter day in the history of St. Johns' Catholic Church in Moberly and the events of the day will be long remembered by every member of the parish."

The laying of the corner stone was witnessed by a vast concourse of the citizens of Moberly. Bishop Burke of St. Joseph presided and conducted the exercises incident to the blessing of the corner stone. The fitting exercise on Columbus Day began with a mass at 8 o'clock Saturday morning
