A Special Message from Melissa:

With so many iterations of good bye it is hard to have this day pass unceremoniously, so I find myself compelled to write. Today marks the last day of Your Art’s Desire. Tomorrow, we will release the keys that 17 years earlier unlocked the doors to its possibility.

There is something about endings that invites you to sit in a rarefied opportunity where past, present, and future will all converge, gently asking that you give rightful attention to each.

For months, my present moments could only hold a roiling range of emotion, edging out the space needed for the words, thoughts or hope that had no choice but to simply wait its turn. From sorrow to gratitude, I cycled around a childlike defiance, challenging the need to release this prized possession. It was in this cacophony of inner noise, that we found people standing in front of us, endeavoring to assemble words of gratitude that the ordinariness of most days would never dare them to say.

Over time, the practical reality of endings found its way into our daily activities. Space that once just held our day to day lives, now required excavation and an ever-present grappling with sentimentality and limited space. But it is in this crossroads that the past delivers its treasures. Each encounter with an object brings a flood of memories, once again reminding you of the lives you’ve touched, and the challenges you have overcome. The best gift this kind of retrospective provides is the one ushered in with, “Wow, I don’t even remember doing that.” Delivering a reflection of a resilience and cleverness that somehow, even your ego lost track of taking ownership of.

It is only in this kind of reverie that you can dare to look at the vast field of opportunity…and uncertainty…that the future holds open to you. It is in the infinite wisdom of revisiting the past, that you find the courage to meet the only inquiry the future knows how to ask, “And in which direction will you choose to travel today?” Thank you for the role you played in the life of Your Art’s Desire and for bearing witness to it all.

A surreal landmark has been reached, my friends.

After 17 years of patterning our actions around what serves our client needs and wants, we are at the truly uncomfortable crossroads of having to transition our time and effort to finishing well and attending to what we need to close this business responsibly.

We acknowledge and understand this is a disappointing landmark for our clients. But trust us, there is nothing intuitive or easy for us to say, "No, I'm sorry, I can't" so we thank you ahead of time for understanding we will not be making any exceptions to this decision because it comes out of necessity.

We are immensely grateful for all of your support, friendship and continued love. And thank you for 17 amazing years of creating beauty together!

THIS IS A RARE AND IMPORTANT POST: Take a look at this image. This is not a work of art we currently have on display. In fact, this is a reinterpreted image from a photo captured in 1931 from artist George Brassai. We are using it as a metaphor for an important announcement. Study this image, what do you see? What are you not able to see? What do you feel? Who do you connect with?

When we started Your Art’s Desire in 2005, there was this magical momentum that just kept opening doors and leading us to opportunities, each step of the way assuring us we were exactly where we were supposed to be. In many ways, from the birth of the name to the humble beauty of the space, we felt we were led to the inconceivably privileged role of being a balloon merchant – a purveyor of joy!!!!

Imagine the feeling of holding this colorful, richly diverse, voluminous, and buoyant collection of happiness and celebration that people couldn’t help but take notice of. And with every work of art purchased and each custom frame project completed, we felt we were the ones delivering and witnessing that crazy good feeling of wonder and awe depicted on the young child’s face in this piece. It has been a truly privileged position. So much so that for almost 17 years, we seemingly lost sight of the responsibility the balloon merchant holds, as well.

Each balloon needs to be mindfully inflated, each string securely fastened, and the collection needs to be assembled with painstaking curation to strike the right presence and appeal. Clearly, the balloon merchant lives with the reality that the environment holds a multitude of threats to these fragile emblems of joy. And no less demanding of attention, the merchant knows intimately, that one careless distracted moment could give any and all of the balloons the unapologetic opportunity to follow their nature and simply depart their earthbound tether.

After nearly 17 years of assembling a myriad of choices that has kept us in the position of delivering joy and carrying the earnest responsibility of steward, Ken and I find ourselves being called to share our talents with the world differently. Ken will be committing all his energy to his art career and Melissa, in the context of a world pandemic, is finding herself called back to the healing arts and human service.

As I type this, my fingers tremor and reflect the amount of emotion this announcement holds for us. We want you to know, this is a choice made on our own terms, at the height of our business success and we are very proud of what we created and how it will be remembered. And we very much look forward to the new journeys that await us.

Utilizing the metaphor just a bit further, as of June 30, 2022 Ken and I will be releasing the rich and colorful legacy of Your Art’s Desire into the ethers. There will be metaphorical color in the sky not because we carelessly lost hold of it, but rather because we had the courage to release it so that the world could witness with us as our legacy dances on the air currents of sweet memories and fond appreciation.

We thank you for the myriad of ways you’ve blessed our lives with your trust, support, collaboration, and friendship. We know you will have some feelings about this announcement, and we avail ourselves to the many conversations you wish to have. But we also wanted to avail as much time as possible for you to assemble any remaining projects you want our collaboration with. At this point, we feel we can safely take orders through April 30, 2022 and still complete them before our final days. There will be many more updates as time marches closer to this date, but for now please feel and know this:
