Opened in 1990, Northern Clay Center is now an established ceramic arts organization. Through special programs, lectures, symposia, and publications, we reach a national and international audience, as well as a direct audience of regional participants. Other programs, such as the American Pottery Festival, McKnight Residencies, and other fellowship grants, bring national artists to the region to continually feed a lively exchange of ideas and aesthetics.

We’re having so much fun chatting with artists, shopping for pottery, and learning new clay skills at American Pottery Festival! All pottery is available now for purchase online and in person, free to view and shop. Click the link in our bio to shop now, or join us in person again tomorrow (August 30) from 10 am - 5 pm!

We had the best time tonight at the American Pottery Festival Opening Night, connecting with artists, seeing the full exhibition, and of course, shopping for pottery! Couldn’t make it tonight? Tonight we kicked off our first American Pottery Festival event for 2026 - a wonderful workshop with artist Celia Feldberg Celia Feldberg Ceramics ! The students made some very fun tiles, using sgraffito and underglaze painting techniques that Feldberg uses in her work.

Join us this weekend, Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30 for free artist talks with American Pottery Festival 2026 artists! Learn about the process behind the incredible work in this exhibition through these talks.

All free artist talks will be hosted in the NCC galleries, and streamed on Instagram Live. Each informal talk will be about 15 minutes long, with time at the end for questions from the audience!

This month, we’re highlighting work by Sam Chung Sam Chung !

In these pieces, Chung draws from Chinese calligraphy and Korean folk painting, bringing those visual languages into conversation with functional ceramic forms.

The Flow Series explores the gestural brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy, translated into black underglaze across white stoneware.

In the Tree Teapot and Tree Box, twisting branches become a metaphor for growth, lineage, diaspora, proliferation, and branching histories. The forms also reference the exaggerated, curling trees found in Korean folk paintings, trees that can sometimes appear almost more like rubber than wood.
