Meet Featured Artist:
SARAH WIEBEN
 
Through my college studies of Russian history and culture and from my time living there, I became enamored with Russian icons. More than their beauty, I became fascinated by the way they are meant to work. If a believer stands or kneels before an icon of Mary, for example, and prays fervently, the faithful believe that a miracle happens and one is no longer standing before an image of Mary, but are in the presence of Mary. It’s a metaphysical transference of experience.

Now, I’m not really expecting something miraculous to happen when a person views my paintings, but I do genuinely hope for a similar kind of transference of experience from me to you. If I’ve been inspired by an element of the natural world, for example a cold winter’s day, I’m hoping you feel the cold of the air and the wind on your face.

Featured Artist Highlight: S. Catrin Magnusson

S. Catrin Magnusson is a Stillwater, MN based multidisciplinary artist currently working in clay and wood. Her work is sculptural and consist of black, abstract wall pieces with forms that undulate organically or interweave the painted square. 
 
She draws inspiration from earth sciences: geology to geomagnetism, and research into the interconnectivity of species and the earth. 

In her current body of work, she is investigating forms in clay and wood. Her artistic body includes sculpture, fiber, film, and painting with a strong influence of traditional Scandinavian handcrafts.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Sweden / Mahtomedi, MN

Who are your artistic influences or mentors?
Maya Lin, Pierre Huyghe, Chris Marker
 
What color do you use most, and why?
Black, it’s beautiful, rich, deceptive, meditative, and reveals more about the form.
 
When is your favorite time to create?
Afternoon to create and 3 am to think.

How would you describe your style to someone unfamiliar with your work?
Process-oriented, abstract, and obsessed with the manipulation/transformation of materials.
