SOUL OF THE SOUTHSIDE Juneteenth Celebration had another great day for the community to come together and enjoy great entertainment, food trucks, acrobatic artists, kids activities, shaded places to eat food, local dance groups, senior citizens’ demonstrations, and cultural institutions exhibits’ like MAAHMG’s The Black Vote Exhibition, the Bell Museum, In Black Ink, and tpt/PBS’ Josie Johnson’s Hope in the Struggle video viewing. A wonderful Juneteenth Celebration Concert at Orchestra Hall offered the Museum with an opportunity to inform the public about African American history in Minnesota. We exhibited The Black Vote Exhibition.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marking June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom.

Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, the news did not reach Texas until more than two years later, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced General Order No. 3.

Now recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of freedom, resilience, and the long fight for justice.

On this day, 106 years ago, three Black men—Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie—were lynched in downtown Duluth.

Each year on June 15, the community gathers at the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial plaza for a time of solemn remembrance, reflection, and a commitment to racial justice.
