"Gidibaajimomin / We Tell Stories" features 18 new Woodland Style artworks by Gordon C***s, as well as past works of the artist, and examples of early Woodland Style artworks from Norval Morrisseau and Sam Ash. Gordon C***s is a self-taught artist working in a variety of mediums including linoleum block prints, paintings, pen and ink drawings, sculpture, and prints created from cedar smoke and gold leaf.

C***s notes: “Woodland Art style images are not a religion but a way of life. Stories of the images were told during the time when the Ojibwa people would gather in lodges during the season of snow. The stories are for teaching your role in the community and on how to participate in the Ojibwa community.”

"Gordon C***s: Gidibaajimomin / We Tell Stories” on view through August 30.

“The raven has gravitas. It is a bird of importance in the lore of mankind. This is perhaps because of intelligence as well as large size and serious black color. There is nothing frivolous about the raven. Even so, ravens enjoy playing, performing impressive aerobatics seemingly for the joy of it. Their vocalizations go beyond mere bird cries. They seem to almost talk to each other with quite a complex vocabulary. I have seen ravens all over the northern hemisphere, usually in wild and remote areas. We do have ravens close to our home, but usually in the more rugged upland habitat rather that at the seashore. I depicted this one in winter oak outside my studio window so I could paint the tree direct from nature without leaving the studio. I chose the stark, white background to lend dignity to the bird and his magnificent somber plumage.” ~ Robert Bateman

OPENING RECEPTION SAT MAY 30 2pm-5pm! NATURE NARRATIVES – Group Exhibition showcases 70 works by 24 Artists including Minnesota artist Dan Mackerman who preserves moments in nature painted in “Easterly Wind” 12x16” oil on panel and “Superior Boathouse” 30x40” featuring sweeping and intense Northern Minnesota richness, color, and calm brush.

With a strong Nature Narrative encompassing preservation and earth, several Herman “Hank” Rowan paintings from the sixties feature ash in paint texture in “Silent Zaragoza” 72x50” oil on canvas 1962 and “Raga Beach” 73x73” oil on Canvas 1967. Herman “Hank” Rowan was a Groveland Gallery Founder who 53 years ago was a favorite University of Minnesota professor and taught many of the Groveland Gallery family of artists over the years.

Artist Brock Larson of Duluth, Minnesota honors nature with lush oil paintings such as “Blue & Gold” oil on panel 43.5x62.5” in distressed gold hand crafted frame, “July Skies” oil on panel 12x14.5” and several other extraordinary rich plein air paintings. Brock took first place in Plein air Grand Marais in 2023 and 2024 and was chosen to be juror for the 2025 competition.

Another deeply moving NATURE NARRATIVES: Group Exhibition piece is shared by St. Paul artist Joshua Cunningham “Tangled up in Spring” oil on linen 35.5x45.5” a plein air painting created in Philadelphia along Crum Creek. Amidst a cold rain he painted while both saturated and focused. He mentions the sprinkle of light where the water comes around the bend, where a spectacularly lit tree stands strong and reliable, reminding him of a dear friend. He spent two afternoons painting to catch this perfect light.

NATURE NARRATIVES: Group Exhibition features works from Groveland Gallery artists Richard Abraham, Allison Johanson, Mike Paul, Brian Stewart, Paul Granlund, Dan O’Kane, Meg Ojale, Dan and Lee Ross, Phil Lichtenhan, Don Biehn, Katherine Steichen Rosing, Karen Savage Blue, Dan McAvey, Paula Gustafson, Carol Sandgren, Clara Ueland, William “Bill” Murray, Josephine Cora Prins, Joshua Cunningham, Brock Larson, Dan Mackerman and Avagail Manneberg.

...IT’S TIME! Spring nesting has arrived in Minnesota and Groveland Gallery with artist Phillip Lichtenhan’s adorable nest collection sculpted in found weathered industrial materials. Favored elements include chicken wire, barbed wire, steel banding material and other metal objects that have gained a beautiful patina from the natural forces of weather and time.

Philip seeks out along railroads, alleyways, roadsides, either in the city or out in the wild…the discards of our world's industry to weave his fresh and hope-filled nest collection into a serene and powerful metaphor of life.

The lovely blues and cream colors of his eggs are made of high fire stoneware and glazed with high fire glazes or hand painted with high quality acrylics. The glazed eggs may be displayed outdoors and retain their finish and color virtually forever. Truly, an early season nature narrative.
