Willey House Stories Part 21 – Giving What They Had to Give | Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation

If you've ever been curious about Frank Lloyd Wright's complex relationships with his clients or interested in the history of the Nakoma and Nakomis statuettes, this is your article.

Every house has stories to tell, particularly if the house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Some stories are familiar. Some are even true. Some, true or not, have been lost to time, while others are yet to be told. Steve Sikora, owner of the Malcom Willey House, continues his exploration of the h...

The Lamberson House

Our friends Peter Maunu and Irimi Maunu-Kocian own the 1948 Jack Lamberson House in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Here is a video of their house produced by the Iowa Architectural Foundation. Stafford Norris who performed the Willey House Restoration also did theirs. The link will only be active for a short time. So take a look.

Woodstock ~ Joni Mitchell

If there is a thematic conclusion to my series The Space Within this song is most definitely the soundtrack. Just as Malvina Reynolds’ Little Boxes opened the series Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock serves as the perfect closure. Part 5 goes live Tuesday morning on the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s Whirling Arrow Blog.

A look back at a time that brought people together with music, celebration and love! Sure there was lots of s*x, drugs and rock & roll...but the true nature ...

John Lennon - Free as a Bird Piano Demo 1

This melancholy rendition of one of the John Lennon’s songs, overdubbed after his death by The Beatles, is featured in the final week of my 5-part Series on The Space Within. It launches next Tuesday morning. This specific version is labeled (Free as a Bird - Take 1) on a bootleg CD I have. YouTube calls it (Free as a Bird - Piano Demo 1.) “It’s the NEAREST thing to be free as a bird.”

Ceramic Artist Greg Payce's use of negative space

Tomorrow is Week 4 of my series The Space Within. The work of Gregory Pace featured here, is a rare and perfect example of an artist who designs in the negative space around the obvious physical object. I believe Wright was able to envision space in this way.

I wrote an article and worked closely on the development of the upcoming issue of the Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly magazine, produced by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation The issue explores how Frank Lloyd Wright used “The Space Within” his buildings to create an architecture for better living that creates a space that is not only beautiful, it improves the health and happiness of those who inhabit it. My piece links to a 5-part blog series on the Foundation website specifically exploring Frank Lloyd Wright’s remarkable use of space at the Willey House. The first part of which will launch with the magazine on March 1.

The magazine is available exclusively to members of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and they are offering a 10% discount to anyone who sees this post. Visit FrankLloydWright.org/membership to join and use the code WILLEY to get your discount (Offer valid through Feb. 28, 2021). Your membership comes with a number of member benefits beyond the magazine, while helping to preserve an important American cultural legacy, along with Wright’s homes Taliesin and Taliesin West.

Hi, we’re only 2 people visiting from Japan first week of August, 2018. Is there a place/site where we can meet other small groups so we can combine to 10 people? Would really be unforgettable for us if we can experience this. Thanks.
