Painting the Pacific Northwest coast of San Juan Island amidst - after a feverish 75 minutes of blocking in composition, shapes, values & colors; I'm taking a break to let my oil paint tack up. And waiting for the light to return - even as I'm aware how quickly & how much the light changed from the sun glare of early morning. I'll paint in the foliage - and maybe refine a bit before lunch. Maybe I'm do a study of the soft waves & interplay of light, rock & water.

A refreshing walk in the rain within the Biological Preserve
Only the third day of rain in 3-1/2 weeks - proving that yes, San Juan Island & the town of Friday Harbor is indeed in the rain shadow of the Vancouver Island Coastal Range of mountains!

Just the second day of rain since my arrival at - a welcome treat for the trees!

"Glow Among Treetops",
9"H x 12"W oil painting.
Upon arriving at , I was struck by the majestic Douglas Fir trees of this Biological Preserve. Not old growth, but the next best thing - 100 year old trees, likely.

My art fellowship expands the concept of lighting beyond the design I practice at . Kip Howell, artist & marine biologist gives new meaning to “Night lighting”. Recently, at , I was lucky to join fellow students in exploring nocturnal marine life from the floating breakwater. “Dinner plate jelly” (Solmissus albescens) is the jelly moving in the ocean beside the plankton floating aimlessly (plankton is subject to the power of the current). Besides the invertebrates and plankton, the illuminated water, faces & sky were captivating!

Today's Seminar Speaker
Sophie Nuber, will speak about the intersection of science and art. Her talk is titled "The Amalgam of Science and Art: Empowering Communities through Interdisciplinary, Data-Informed Art". I'l looking forward to learning much from Dr. Nuber!

Sophie is a climate and marine postdoctoral fellow in the UW School of Oceanography whose work has ranged from studying the effects of climate change on coral reefs to untangling past oceanic circulation changes in previous times of changing climate. In addition to this research, she's had a long and fruitful collaboration with artist and educator La Benida Hui. You can read about the traveling art exhibit they collaborated on in Consilience, a journal focused on the intersection of science and art.
