This weekend is the last chance to view the surreal photography series by Norwegian-Finnish artist duo Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth, as well as works by Swedish-American artist Elof Wedin and local artist Presley Martin. Jan lives on the shores on one of Norway’s most polluted fjords and is a well-known spokesperson for the community.

Jan is at the helm of the area’s revival efforts, and Frierstranda beach, right down from his house, is at the top of his agenda. Growing up, Jan and his friends hung out at his favorite rock (pictured in his portrait), ate lunch, and sat and dried out in the sun after a swim. The push to clean up the beach for children to play on again is close to Jan’s heart. He envisions concerts, gatherings, and good times as the new normal.

There is only one week left to view the “Eyes as Big as Plates” exhibition by photographers Karoline Hjorth & Riitta Ikonen before it closes on October 25.

Join us to kick off the 2026-2027 season of the FIKA Supper Club Concert Series with OK Factor and Jaerv on Sunday, October 18! This collaboration between two highly acclaimed folk ensembles from the US and Sweden has delighted audiences in both countries. They return to ASI together with new songs and stories to tell.

The FIKA Supper Club series brings Nordic-inflected folk, jazz, and classical artists to ASI. Optionally, guests may enjoy extended dinner hours at FIKA Café before the concert, then step into Larson Hall for a musical treat beginning at 7 pm. Don’t miss these nights of musical and culinary delight!

Can you spot someone in the rock face?

Lauren | Colorado, US, 2024

Lauren was only sixteen when she learned about brownfields: contaminated land that nobody is legally obligated to clean up. Her neighborhood of Rossford, Ohio had been manufacturing industrial glass since the late 1800s, leaving behind brownfields.

Now, Lauren is an environmental engineer who has devoted her life to designing experiments to clean contaminated soil using fungi. For her PhD studies, Lauren chose the Atlantic Wood Industries Superfund Site, considered too difficult to clean, where she ran the fungi experiment on the site's most polluted soils and got over eighty percent cleanup rates in a month.

Join us in welcoming back Nichole Accettola on Thursday, October 29, to discuss her latest cookbook, “Scandinavian Everyday: Vibrant, Simple Meals from Northern Europe”, in conversation with Minnesota-based chef and author Amy Thielen.

A CIA-trained chef and IACP award-winning author, Nichole draws on her years living in Denmark and running San Francisco’s Scandinavian-inspired Kantine to explore a simple, sustainable approach to everyday cooking. She’ll be joined by Amy, a two-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author and host of Heartland Table and the Ham Radio podcast, to discuss Nichole’s culinary journey, share insights into the book, and highlight a few favorite recipes.

The event also includes hands-on workshop inspired by the book, offering an opportunity to learn from Nichole herself and new recipes.
