We are thrilled to welcome Scandinavian weaver, textile artist, and craft instructor, Caroline Feyling to ASI in July. She’ll be leading two incredible classes that explore the gap between contemporary and traditional craft.

In her Introduction to Nordic Woven Bands workshop on July 24, students will learn to backstrap weave plain weave bands on a band heddle loom.

The two-day Scandinavian Style Pick Up Band Weaving workshop (July 25-26), students will learn Nordic pick-up style weaving using the traditional backstrap rigid heddle loom.

Learn more about Caroline and try your hand at weaving in her upcoming classes: https://ow.ly/6Swo50ZfhYs

It’s a busy time at ASI! Our exhibitions and collections teams are hard at work doing what they do best: transforming the Turnblad Mansion. There are extra carts, tools, and people throughout the Mansion, literally getting the house in order to showcase Norwegian-Finnish artist duo Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth’s ongoing collaboration, “Eyes as Big as Plates,” as well as an exhibition from local artist, an amateur mycologist, and a Minnesota water steward. Both exhibitions open on June 20, 2026, during our Midsommar Celebration.

On this day in 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Minneapolis and stopped by the American Swedish Institute to enjoy coffee and sandwiches in the Turnblad Mansion's Dining Room. An article from summer 1953 detailed the visit, the president’s remarks, and his longing for more time to take in the exhibition on view, “Swedish Modern,” before (reluctantly) departing in a blue convertible.

Enjoy more archival material like this through ASI's collections, which maintain a one-of-a-kind library, archives, and museum object collection relating to Swedish and Swedish American culture and history.
