It was a dark and stormy night, but that didn't keep people away from Scott Herring's program on "Trains of the Anthracite" last Thursday night. Over fifty came out to the Valley Road Venue, Duncott, to hear Scott and to view his train posters, especially the one of "Big Boy." Thank you to all who attended and to Scott Herring and the volunteers at the Minersville Area Historical Society who made it possible.

Calling all train enthusiasts! Scott Herring, "The Last Anthracite Photographer," will make a return stop at Minersville to discuss Trains of the Anthracite on August 20! Come get a poster of Scott's premiere of his "Big Boy" photo! A large selection of other train posters will also be available as will license plates with both railroad and ethnic themes. This is one you don't want to miss!

The Minersville Area Historical Society was so very sorry to learn of the passing of former Superintendent M. Joseph Brady on August 4. Minersville lost a true champion of education and public service whose legacy will continue to serve the students of Minersville for years to come.

Mr. Brady was an early and loyal supporter of the Minersville Area Historical Society as he was of all Minersville civic, athletic, and charitable organizations. He had a deep impact on the education of many of the members of the Society and continued to follow and support their pursuits long after their high school years.

All of us at the Society send our sincere condolences to Mr. Brady’s family and to all who mourn him.

Patrick will have displays of his artwork, and he will be selling and autographing his books (cash or checks only).

On June 11, a crowd of close to fifty learned about the association of Irish mummery with the development of the Molly Maguires in Minersville and Cass Township when Mark Bulik discussed his book, “The Sons of Molly Maguire: The Irish Roots of America’s First Labor War.” Attendees learned about the strange association, both in Ireland and in the United States, between mummers’ mocking antics and the Molly Maguires’ more serious activities against wealthy landowners in Ireland and wealthy mine owners in the U.S. Thank you to Mark Bulik for delivering such an interesting program and to all who came out to hear him.
