Meet our Artists - Eric Kudrna
My story begins in Monona, Wisconsin, the youngest of 10 children in the Kudrna family. Growing up in close quarters tends to build strong family bonds. I enjoyed tinkering in the garage with my dad and brothers slowly developing a creative and technical aptitude. My brothers have been a strong influence in my journey as an artist. In my teens I began working with my brother Mark at Kudrna Construction. Mark is gifted in woodworking and construction. I learned in detail how to build and renovate homes. After taking a few art classes my attention turned to sculpture (my start in stone) and furniture design. Around this time, my brother Peter was accepted as one of the select artists for the Art Fair on the Square in Madison. I utilized my new found knowledge in furniture to assist Peter in building some truly unique pieces. After this experience I went all in on stone and got a job working with my oldest brother Chuck at Quarra Stone where I have been for the last 27 years.
I slowly refined my stone working skills and learned to work with many types of stone. I have worked on some of the most iconic architectural stone structures around the world. These projects include several state capitols; Wisconsin, New York (Albany), Kansas (Topeka) and Iowa (Des Moines). I have also done repairs on new construction on several distinguished institutions of higher learning around the country; UW Madison, Harvard, Yale, Amherst, and Princeton to name a few.
Of all the structures I have worked on I am most proud of the United States Capitol Visitors Center in Washington D.C., the Collier Memorial in Boston, and the Memorial for Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia. These structures are special to me because I enjoy working on projects that have significant meaning to me and the public at large.
I enjoy working stone to a more modern design especially when my design elicits a smile. ‘Stone Cold Humor.’ I enjoy taking a project in a direction where no one has gone before. When inspiration calls, I immerse myself in the quest to bring the piece to life. To paraphrase Michaelangelo Buonarroti, the image is in the stone, I just have to move the rock out of the way.
Collaborating with other artists to help bring their visions to life is another personal joy for me. Collaboration has allowed me to develop finishes and forms that have not been attempted before.
My focus moving forward is modern stone designs that incorporate historical methods by moving them in a new and different direction. I challenge myself every day to bring interesting, creative, and funny things to life with stone. My aim is to make people happy and when people are happy with my designs, I am happy!
