The Jewish Museum Milwaukee is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Jewish people in southeastern Wisconsin and celebrating the continuum of Jewish heritage and culture. The history of American Jews is rooted in thousands of years of searching for freedom and equality. We are committed to sharing this story and the life lessons it brings with it, so that we may enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of Jewish life and culture.

Happy Birthday, Lizzie Black Kander!

A champion of education, social reform, and immigrant support, Kander dedicated her life to helping Milwaukee’s growing Jewish community thrive. From founding organizations that provided clothing, classes, and resources for immigrant families to publishing the beloved Settlement Cookbook, her impact continues to shape our city more than a century later, leaving a lasting legacy of social reform and cultural enrichment.

Happy Jewish American Heritage Month! Today we are celebrating Helen Daniels Bader’s 99th birthday!

From growing up during the Great Depression in South Dakota to co-founding Aldrich Chemical Company with Alfred Bader, Helen dedicated her life to service, philanthropy, and advocacy for older adults and those living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Through the Helen Bader Foundation and today’s Bader Philanthropies, her vision has helped strengthen communities and expand opportunities for countless individuals in Wisconsin, Israel, and beyond. Her legacy lives on through the institutions, programs, and lives she continues to impact.

In honor of Helen’s birthday, Jewish Museum Milwaukee — in partnership with Bader Philanthropies — is hosting a free community day celebrating reflection, creativity, identity, and connection during Mental Health Awareness Month and Jewish Heritage Month. We invite the community to join us for interactive activities, shared stories, and moments of reflection inspired by Helen’s enduring legacy of compassion and inclusion.

JMM will also be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.

Happy Jewish American Heritage Month! Each day we are highlighting objects or photographs from our collection that help us learn more about Jewish American history.

We celebrated Golda Meir’s birthday at the beginning of May by reflecting on her early life and formative years. Did you know that after becoming Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she returned to Milwaukee—the city where she grew up—during a visit that same year?

The images below capture her visit to Mitchell Field, where she addressed a large crowd and was warmly welcomed home.

Happy Jewish American Heritage Month! Each day we are highlighting objects or photographs from our collection that help us learn more about Jewish American history.

Our archivist catalogs a lot of things. But every once in a while, they catalog a coconut. 🥥

This coconut belonged to Herbert Wilk/Shapiro, a sergeant in the 986th Signal Service Company who served during World War II in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. The words “Dutch New Guinea” are carved into its surface.

Dr. Jay Larkey organized emergency medical facilities and a free clinic at St. Boniface Church during Milwaukee's open housing marches in 1967. In 1972, Dr. Larkey received the prestigious B'nai B'rith Human Rights Award for his commitment to civil rights and social justice.

Pictured below are Dr. Larkey’s medical bag and several pieces of basic equipment used to provide medical care in the basement of St. Boniface Church to the young men and women marching for equal housing.
