‼️ Important info about tonight's Wreaths on Parade Live Auction ‼️

Due to the limited capacity of the museums technological ability, and the capacity of staff and volunteers, you must be present to bid on a wreath.

The museum does NOT have the capacity to handle both in person bidding and phone/online bidding.

If you have a wreath you want and know someone coming to the event, you can have them bid on the wreath on your behalf, but the staff and volunteers will not be able to handle taking in person and phone/online bids during the event.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your understanding. Staff and volunteers hope that many of you will be able to make it in person to bid on your favorite wreath or wreaths.

Will you be one of the approximately 73 million US shoppers who venture out to a brick-and-mortar store today to score big on Black Friday Deals? Even if you do not want to brave the crowded stores today, you may be asking "Why is the Friday after Thanksgiving referred to as Black Friday?" Well...we are so glad you asked! 😉

The first time “Black Friday” specifically referred to shopping the day after Thanksgiving was in the 1950s. Police in Philadelphia complained about an influx of people coming to the city to shop the day after Thanksgiving, calling it a “Black Friday” because they had to control crowds. From there, the term was used to describe shopping on that day and gained momentum with each passing year.

Originally, retailers were upset about the name “Black Friday” because the term had a negative connotation, Koehn says. Efforts arose to call it “Big Friday” instead, but they ultimately failed. Retailers then changed the narrative and decided that Black Friday is when they’re supposed to be “in the black,” a financial phrase describing the profitability and prosperity of a business, in contrast to being “in the red,” or in a deficit.

The idea of positioning Black Friday as a shopping holiday “galloped forward” between the 1970s and 1980s as retailers instigated competition between one another, as well as expanding the deals they offered.

Overall, “there was no defining moment that made us call Black Friday ‘Black Friday, but really the evolution of language and definition, and retail practices and consumers responding to that.”

11/22/2023

Shortly after noon on November 22, 1963 the unimaginable happened when President John F Kennedy Jr was assassinated while riding in a Presidential Motorcade in downtown Dallas Texas.

President Kennedy, accompanied by his wife Jackie, had arrived in Texas for what was planned to be a two-day, five-city tour of Texas, where President Kennedy was hoping to gain support for his New Frontier Policies, and for the upcoming Presidential election in 1964.

Upon arrival at the airport in Dallas, the President and First Lady greeted well wishers before climbing in to the back of a convertible (the protective bubble had been removed since it had stopped raining), sitting behind Governor Connelly and his wife Nellie. The procession left the airport and traveled along a ten-mile route that wound through downtown Dallas on the way to the Trade Mart where the President was scheduled to speak at a luncheon.

Crowds of excited people lined the streets and waved to the Kennedys. The car turned off Main Street at Dealey Plaza around 12:30 p.m. As it was passing the Texas School Book Depository, gunfire suddenly reverberated in the plaza.

Bullets struck the president's neck and head and he slumped over toward Mrs. Kennedy.

The car sped off to Parkland Memorial Hospital just a few minutes away. But little could be done for the President. A Catholic priest was summoned to administer the last rites, and at 1:00 p.m. John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead.

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson would take the oath of office as the 36th President of the United States on Air Force One at Dallas Love Air Force Base, with a shocked Jackie Kennedy, who was still wearing the pink outfit now splattered with her deceased husbands blood, standing beside him.

The assassination would rock the country, and change the course of history forever.

If you were alive when President Kennedy was assassinated, do you remember where you were when you heard the news? Feel free to share your memories of this tragic event in the comments.

11/19/2023

Today November 19th is the 160th anniversary of Lincoln giving his now famous Gettysburg Address. For nearly ninety years, there were no known photographs of Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg.

That changed dramatically in 1952 when the intrepid Washington, D.C., archivist Josephine Cobb (1906-86) went searching—and found him. She enlarged a mislabeled glass plate negative until she identified Lincoln’s face in the crowd.

Cobb enlarged the image repeatedly—some twenty times––until she could make out the bare-headed, downcast, bearded face of Abraham Lincoln. Cobb had not only found the war-weary president in the photo, she had also found the first known photograph of the dedication at the Soldiers’ Cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863. Within hours of when the exposure was made, Lincoln would speak the most famous piece of oratory in American history—273 words that redefined the war and the meaning of freedom in this country.

Anyone else might have written a book or article about the discovery of Lincoln at Gettysburg, for such an achievement could launch or crown a Lincoln scholar’s career. But it was characteristic both of Cobb’s humility, and perhaps her ethics as an archivist, that this discovery was unselfishly given to the field as simply more information about an object under her care.

How did "Armistice Day" become "Veterans Day"; and why do we observe it on November 11th?

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor Veterans of World War I,

In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the Veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American Veterans of all wars.
