Come enjoy a last minute add on to our action packed calendar today with the 5th New Hampshire Civil War reenactors at the New Hampshire Farm Museum!

We welcome their drills and camp setup and so will you!

The historic 1801 Plummer Ridge School #1 (the first of 16 schools built in Milton) will be open for tours, too!

Bring the kids, or bring yourself! Admission is
$15 per adult,
$13 per senior,
$10 per child.
Don't forget to pack a picnic lunch!

Wow! Now that's a pair of scissors!

There's absolutely no mistaking or misplacing this pair that was used for the Historic Plummer Ridge School House Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on August 21st at the New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton, NH.

The scissors were supplied by the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce!

Cutting the ribbon on behalf of the Museum 's Board of Trustees was Milton resident and Trustee JoAnne Stewart Richards.

The 1801 school was moved to the Museum on April 1st, 2026.

Through the generosity of Dr. Catherine Grellet, a sizeable donation was made in memory of her late husband, Fred Smith, to help restore the school.

Smith attended a one room school in rural Ireland until he was 12.
He later graduated from Trinity College before launching a career in the semiconductor industry.
He passed away in 2025.

The New Hampshire Farm Museum is grateful to all of our donors.

The New Hampshire Farm Museum is a non-profit and does not receive any federal or state funding.

Dr. Catherine Grellet addresses the audience at the Plummer Ridge School House Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, August 21st.

A significant donation made to the NHFM for the move and restoration of the school was
received from Dr. Grellet in memory of her late husband, Fred Smith, who launched his career in the semiconductor industry in 1968.

Dr. Grellet recalled that her late husband attended a one room school in Ireland thru the age of 12.

She was warmly introduced by New Hampshire Farm Museum's Program Director, Janet Hotchkiss, right.

Over 80 people came, celebrated, toured, and then were treated to light refreshments.

Chair elect of the Board of Directors of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce Mary Henderson, left, is introduced by Program Director Janet Hotchkiss at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the historic Plummer Ridge School House on August 21st.

The project to move the building to the New Hampshire Farm Museum from its off-site location was first discussed in October, 2023!

The targeted date to move it was October, 2027.

It was completed ahead of time through the due diligence of Executive Director Jon Hotchkiss and the generosity of donations made by people throughout the United States!

The school will be open for tours at the upcoming 18th Great New Hampshire Pie Fest on
Saturday,
September 19th.

This is a fundraising event for the Museum.
Adults $15,
Seniors $13,
Children ages 4 and up $10.

Milton's history
came alive this week at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Plummer Ridge School House Number 1.

This was the very first of the 16 schools that was built in Milton. Only two remain.

One has been converted to the Milton Mills Library.

This one is in pristine condition for its 225 age and will be incorporated into New Hampshire Farm Museum programs.

Each desk sat two children. The younger children sat in the front of the school, while the older ones sat in the back.

Each desk accommodated two children and had one ink well.

These desks were a complete surprise to Museum staff!

They were placed in the attic when it ceased to be a school in 1911, but the removal of the staircase to the attic made the desks inaccessible for over 100 years!!!

Our thanks to painter Vinnie Breeden and cleaning crew Lisa Boyle for restoring the sheen to these 1800's gems.

The school will be open during Pie Fest for tours!
