Felix de la Co**ha first began his Artist in Residency at Fallingwater in 2004. During the 20 years, he has created quite the collection of paintings, many of which have been displayed around the Pittsburgh the region and internationally.

A new video detailing de la Co**ha's work over two decades at Fallingwater is posted on our YouTube Channel. The video explores his approach to documenting Fallingwater as an oil painter and how the residency has influenced his craft.

The Kaufmanns enjoyed travels to Mexico in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Liliane Kaufmann once wrote of Mexico, “I have never seen so much sheer natural beauty added to so much that is old and interesting.”

During their trips, they purchased ancient, colonial, folk and modern Mexican art and objects for Fallingwater. Displayed in the Guest House is a small collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts.

Meet Tishya from Seattle, Washington! Tishya recently completed Fallingwater Institute’s High School Residency Drawing & Model-Making course this summer and spent a week onsite at High Meadow with other high school students.

“This was a very unique experience with just being able to be a part of nature and immersing yourself with Frank Lloyd Wright designs. Being able to enjoy and take in the natural environment and to see a historical building was just a wonderful experience.”

The students were able to complete their designs in the Cheteyan Studio at High Meadow.

“For my final project, I took inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs of organic architecture by not interrupting the natural environment and finding a way to embrace it in the design.”

More stories from students who took part in Fallingwater Institute’s High School Residency courses will be shared on Fallingwater’s YouTube channel.

Join us in congratulating and welcoming the Historic Moravian Bethlehem District in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to the UNESCO World Heritage List!

Already designated as the Moravian Bethlehem National Historic Landmark District, the site spans 10 acres and includes nine buildings, four ruins and a cemetery.

After a decades-long nomination and review process, the site -- including two other historic Moravian Church Settlements in Gracehill, Northern Ireland/UK and Herrnhut, Germany -- now joins the UNESCO World Heritage List as a single World Heritage Site, the Moravian Church Settlement. Pennsylvania is now home to three unique and culturally important sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including Fallingwater and Independence Hall in Philadelphia!

A 1956 flood washed away one of the Kaufmann's beloved sculptures, Marino Marini's "The Angel of the City," also known as the Horseman, which once greeted visitors on the stonewall of the Car Bridge. Countless search parties were sent out to retrieve the prized sculpture, but only some fragments were recovered.

Nearly 55 years after its disappearance, a curious tour guide, Seth Weible and his friend, Adam Crider discovered two large sections of the horseman sculpture poking out of the muddy banks of Bear Run. These pieces have since been preserved in our collections archive.

Pictured are close friends of the Kaufmanns, A. James (left) and Darthea Speyer (right) with Marino Marini's "The Angel of the City" on the stone abutment of the Car Bridge Fallingwater Archive, 2024.13.A.

Originally, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a washroom to be located just inside the entrance to the house, but the Kaufmanns asked him to place it outdoors so they would have a footbath. Family and guests could then rinse their feet after hiking around the property.

Fallingwater is pleased to partner with Wheeling University's The Clifford M. Lewis, SJ Appalachian Institute as part of its service and experiential learning immersion trips. The trips allow high school and college volunteer groups to help with landscape projects within Bear Run Nature Reserve and across the Fallingwater site.

The Appalachian Institute promotes research, service and advocacy for and with the people of Appalachia to build healthier, stronger, and more sustainable communities.

Everyone headed to the classic view for photos as they took a break from all their hard work. Shown are students from St. Joseph's Preparatory in Philadelphia, St. Xavier High School in Ohio, Regis High School in New York and Brophy Prep in Arizona.

You can volunteer, too! Check out all of our opportunities: https://fallingwater.org/volunteer/

Changing temperatures, rain, snow and sunlight take their toll on outdoor artwork, says Fallingwater Collections Manager and Archivist Hannah Ciocco.

Richmond Barthé’s Serena (ca. 1940), a depiction of Harlem Renaissance actress Rose McClendon, is a solid cast concrete sculpture coated with black pigmented
paste wax. "A more rigorous conservation effort in 2018 revealed four horizontal seams in the concrete, indicating that the concrete had been poured into a mold in several pieces before its assembly by the artist," Hannah explains.

Because Serena is located outdoors in a wet environment, it is subject to constant absorption of moisture through pinholes in the wax coating, which causes the wax to flake over time.

The conservation treatment was repeated in 2021 and again this spring. "Art conservators Connie Stromberg, Diane Fullick and Howard Wellman thoroughly vacuumed it, removed flaking black wax, wiped the surface with mineral spirits, and applied clean wax before applying a final coat of pigmented wax."

Most of the outdoor sculptures at Fallingwater are covered with protective boxes during winter, but exposure during other times of the year contributes to deterioration, Hannah says. "Continuous care and conservation of these important pieces is paramount."

Did you know that in addition to Fallingwater, the Kaufmanns built another landmark of modern architecture in Palm Springs, California? Designed in 1946 by Richard Neutra, a pioneering Austrian-American architect, the Kaufmann Desert House (shown here) came to epitomize fashionable modern living in the post-war era.

Neutra’s philosophy of “biorealism” sought to use biological sciences in architecture to strengthen people’s connection to nature and improve health and well-being. Richard Neutra’s son, Dr. Raymond Richard Neutra carries on that legacy as the head of the The Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design.

Join us in person in Fallingwater’s living room on August 27 for an intimate conversation with Raymond Neutra. He’ll discuss his father’s relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright, the Kaufmanns’ house in Palm Springs and the current initiatives underway at the Neutra Institute.

Enjoy engaging conversation and delicious fare at this special event. Reserve your spot beside the fireplace: https://bit.ly/3XiPisR

At the dedication of Fallingwater to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, a Conservancy board member suggested that “Perhaps someday as many as 25,000 would find their way” to the house in rural Mill Run, Pa.

The house opened in 1964 and word spread fast...29,792 people visited the house the first year! All reservations had to be made through one receptionist in Pittsburgh.

Within the first four seasons, people from 50 states and 94 countries had navigated narrow country roads and paid $1.25 to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s keywork built over a waterfall in the woods. Visitation climbed ever upward, peaking at 180,000 in 2016.

A special issue of Conserve magazine commemorates 60 years of Fallingwater being open to the public: https://bit.ly/3GiyUyy.

In a September 1951 letter to Frank Lloyd Wright , Edgar Kaufmann jr. sought another commission for the Kaufmann family: A “place of prayer at Bear Run,” and one that would “balance our city living.”

He added: "The dignity and beauty of your architecture gives us a way of life in and with nature, beyond our best dreams. Mother brings a choice of flowers and foods and comforts, Father brings broad scope of action and actualities, and I some ideas in music; all this combines into a rich life for which we are grateful and humbly so."

By April 1952, Wright had completed plans for the Rhododendron Chapel, named for the lush vegetation surrounding Fallingwater. Its stone masonry mimicked Fallingwater’s, and featured copper roofing, art glass windows and concrete floors scored and pigmented in a deep red color.
