About The Columns...

The Columns was built in 1904 for a man named Dennis McLaughlin, a business mogul from Hudson County, NJ. He built it as a summer home. It has 22 rooms, 11 bedrooms. Just like your summer home! After he died it was sold out of the family, around 1930, and it changed hands on the average of every 7 years. The Pike County Historical Society purchased it in the eary 1980’s, and it has been our home ever since, making us the longest occupants. We strive to not only maintain this aging, beautiful building; but also to run a museum, historical society, local history archive and library. We offer two floors of exhibits which center, mostly, on the people places and things that make up the history of our county. Our prized holdings include an American flag which is stained with President Abraham Lincoln’s blood, stage costumes worn the night of Lincoln’s assassination at Ford’s Theater in Washington DC, and an 1850’s stage coach. We offer historical programs as well as musical and theatrical performances, all in the name of raising funds to keep our doors open and keep our community and its visitors historically enlightened. Your visitation and membership dollars help the cause, so visit or join today and help keep history alive and well in Pike County.
