On behalf of the DIA Board of Directors here at Historic Dorchester Academy in partnership with Explore Liberty, we are very grateful for the amazing turnout and fellowship at yesterday's "Blues & Southern Picnic" event. We look forward to having more community fun!

Dorchester Academy was established in 1871 by the American Missionary Association as a primary school for newly freed people.

Motto: “We ask not for rest, but for the strength to labor on” was the official school motto.

Although its role as a standard academic high school ended in the 1940s, the site transitioned into the Dorchester Cooperative Center. It became a critical training ground for the Civil Rights Movement, serving as a key stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders drafted strategies like "Project C" for the Birmingham campaign.

Today, the historic campus operates as an African-American history museum and community center, where the legacy of its alumni and their motto is still actively honored.

🎬 Leadership in action: While visiting Liberty County earlier this year, the Leadership Southeast Georgia Class of 2026 toured Dorchester Academy to learn about its historic legacy and continued impact.

💡 Inspired by that experience, members of the class came together to raise funds and participate in the annual Walk to Dorchester in support of the Dorchester Improvement Association's ongoing work. Through their own initiative, the class presented a $4,000 donation to support this important mission.

💙 This is the heart of Leadership Southeast Georgia: Leaders who listen, learn, build relationships, and take action. We are proud to celebrate the Class of 2026 and the meaningful impact they continue to make across our region!

Special thanks to Explore Liberty and Hinesville Area Arts Council!

Guests are invited to bring a chair or blanket, pack their favorite picnic and spend the afternoon on the grounds of Dorchester Academy while enjoying a live performance by Grammy-nominated Georgia blues musician Jontavious Willis.

Last Saturday, this canvas banner was displayed during the 26th Annual Walk to Dorchester, a fundraiser for the historic African American school located at 8787 E. Oglethorpe Hwy in Midway, GA. The graphics in the banner is NOT our Dorchester Academy.

Please do not make any donations to any organization on behalf of the Walk to Dorchester Fundraiser other than Dorchester Academy.

We are requesting a Cease and Desist to the creator of this product(s) and the use of "The Walk to Dorchester" slogan.
