Open Tues-Sat from 10-4. Under the direction of the late Thomas G. Little, historical Architect, the Midway Museum, a raised cottage style house typical of those built on the coast in the 18th century, was patterned after homes which stood at Sunbury, Dorchester Village and at Riceboro, including the Stage Coach Inn in Riceboro, which was sketched by Basil Hall on his trip through Georgia in 1828

and described as follows: “a frame-house, being made of timbers squared and fastened together, and afterwards covered with planks at the sides and ends, while the roof is either boarded or protected by shingles, a sort of wooden slate, two feet in length, and six inches wide. Almost all the houses in that part of the country have verandahs, or what they call ‘piazzas’.”

Since its completion, the Midway Museum has served as the pattern for numerous private reconstructions and renovations. The Museum includes period furnishings, artwork, and artifacts. Docents provide guided tours explaining the history of the Midway Church & Society from its founding in 1752 and the contributions made to U.S. history by the Society's members, which include two signers of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

America 250: The exit sign on I-95 in coastal Georgia simply says "Midway". It doesn't look any different than any other exit sign, really. It should, though.

Somehow, the nice people at DOT need to make it known that tiny Midway helped birth this nation. Wouldn't you think that fact should elevate Midway's status just a tick above the ordinary?

Liberty County was named for the fervent patriots who lived in this part of the South leading up to the American Revolution. Two of them - Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnett, lived in Midway, where this Congregational Church was formed in 1752.

Both of those men went on to sign the Declaration of Independence. For frame of reference, Georgia only supplied three signers of that document, giving Liberty County and Midway two-thirds bragging rights for the entire state.

The British came through and burned the church down, but the beauty you see here replaced it in 1792 and has been standing watch over the tiny community ever since.

That includes the time a second army came through a few years later during the Civil War. The building survived then because the Union Army used it as their headquarters.

More recently, we were driving up I-95 on our way home from a few days on St. Simons Island when we decided to stop at McDonald's. And there, mixed in with all the notifications for fast food and gasoline and accommodations, was the simple word "Midway".

Faced with a choice between hash browns and a quick four mile run up the road to say hello to this lovely landmark of American and Southern history, I decided to leave them to their breakfast and go pay my respects.

I can have hashbrowns any old day.
