After escaping poverty and crocodiles, Eritrean refugee in Utah prepares to graduate

Happy World Refugee Day! Midvale has been home to many refugees over the years, and it is wonderful to see that we are still a welcoming and supportive community for those seeking safety and opportunity!

On Wednesday, Abel Hagos will graduate from Hillcrest High School, one of 500 seniors in the Class of 2019. But unlike his fellow graduates, Hagos' road to graduation started 8,000 miles away in Eritrea, a small, impoverished African country.

This one goes out to Bob Dahl! This is a photo of Dahl's meat market courtesy of the Utah State History collections.

Here's a little more info provided by Bob, "My grandpa, Alexander Dahl, built this originally as the Dahl Meat Market. Later it transitioned to a grocery store. My mom worked there from time to time and got to know my dad. They later married. My grandpa also built the house next door (to the right of the store. My dad was born in that house. I'm not sure when the store was built but the house was built in 1900/1901."

You can still find this building on Midvale's Main St!

Happy #EarthDay! A lot has changed in Midvale!
Midvale was once home to five lead and copper smelters. The smelters processed copper from 1902-1907, and lead from 1905-1958. The plant continued milling and concentration of lead ore from 1958 until 1972 when the International lead smelter at Tooele was closed.
Smelter facilities were demolished in the 1970's.

A note of sadness, the Vincent Drug Store is now empty. They have sold almost everything that was there, even all the signage. We were able to get some good items for a display in our Museum.

07/12/2015

FYI: In 2005 we had over 20 volunteers. Today in 2015 we have less than 10. Yes we would love to have your help. We only asked one day a month! We are open Tue. Wed. & Sat. 12:00 to 4:00 PM.
We are located at 7697 S. Main St. in Midvale, directly across the street from the old Vincent Drug Store. Call us at 801-569-8040. Leave a message if we aren't there. We have some exciting things happening in the coming months.
