Middletown Valley Historical Society

Middletown Valley Historical Society The Middletown Valley Historical Society was founded in 1976 to preserve the rich historic and cultural background that shaped the Middletown valley.

The Middletown Valley Historical Society is headquartered in a home constructed on one of the town's original lots, laid out in 1767. The present home was constructed around 1850 using locally quarried stone. It is one of the only remaining stone-faced buildings in Middletown.

The MVHS would like to thank Julie Jenkins for her donation of a paper written by Harriet May Getzendanner, a senior at Middletown High School in 1892 titled "Fields of Usefulness Open to Women." We are in the process of ensuring it is preserved and will make it available to the community. Harriet was a very forward thinking young women, and we are glad to be adding the paper to our collection. Thanks again!

A Special "THANK YOU" to Reuben Moss of the Hagerstown & Frederick Railway Historical Society. Reuben's presentation detailed the importance of the local trolley network to the agricultural communities that it served. In 1896, the railway changed the lives of the valley. It provided a vital link for the area farmers, merchants, and residents in a time before paved roads were common and traveled the streets of cities until 1954. Thanks again for an educational and entertaining evening.

The MVHS gives a special "Thank You" to our guest speaker John Gladhill. John shared personal memories of growing up in the Midletown valley. Topics included penny candy, Main's ice cream factory, fun at Braddock Park, Saturday evenings on Main Street, teaching art, and time with friends and family at Guy Ahalt's meadow. It was an engaging and entertaining evening filled with memories and smiles of yesteryear. Thanks again!

We are changing up the Dinner and Auction this year, and focusing only on Baked Goods. Please donate your favorite Baked Goods item to our Auction. We have also added a presentation by local Historian Jody Brumage, who will bring us some tales coming from Middletown’s history, focusing on the slightly scandalous and salacious aspects f our past! Please extend invitations to attend to your friends, family, and co-workers. The Purpose of this Baked Goods Auction and Dinner are Fun and Fellowship, as well as to raise Funds for the Society to maintain its Museum House and collectibles. This is our major fund-raiser to keep the heat and lights on in our Stone House Museum, and the more that can participate, the more likely we will raise the funds we need.
