🌿 THE PUNCH BOWL × A LITTLE PIECE OF MIDDLETOWN HISTORY 🌿

If you've been around Middletown long enough, chances are you've heard somebody mention “The Punch Bowl.” Maybe you swam there years ago, maybe your parents did, or maybe you've just heard stories about it. The area surrounding this local swimming hole has a history that goes back much further than most people realize. Tucked away in the mountains northwest of Middletown, the Punch Bowl is associated with the historic Castle Rock Springs area, a place once famous for its natural hot and mineral springs.

The springs were developed as a small resort in the late 1800s and were once known as Mills Hot Springs and Noble's Springs. People traveled into the mountains to soak in the hot water and drink water from the cooler sulfur springs, which were believed at the time to have healing properties. By the early 1900s, this wasn't just some little spot hidden in the woods anymore. The resort eventually had a hotel, cottages, bathhouse, swimming pool and even a dance pavilion. One of its large hot springs was recorded in 1914 at about 163 degrees, producing roughly 40,000 gallons of water every day.

There was even a Castle Springs Post Office from 1911 to 1917. Around 1910, businessman and philanthropist Chauncey W. Gibson became involved with Castle Rock Springs and greatly improved the resort. That's the same Chauncey Gibson whose name lives on today at Middletown's Gibson Museum & Cultural Center. After losing his son Houdd, Gibson eventually renamed the property Camp Houdd Gibson in his memory. The property became connected with a children's school and summer resort during the 1920s, and Gibson donated Castle Hot Springs to the Salvation Army in 1928. Somewhere through all those years, the swimming hole and waterfalls nearby became known locally as,

The Punch Bowl.

That's actually one part of the story that remains a little mysterious. I haven't found an old document yet that tells us exactly when or why people started calling it the Punch Bowl. It appears to be one of those Lake County names that was simply passed from one generation of locals to another. Sometimes those are the best pieces of local history. Places we drive past today were once destinations. People traveled miles into these mountains to vacation, dance, swim and soak in the mineral springs.
So now I want to hear from the people who actually remember it:

💛Did you ever swim at the Punch Bowl?

Does anyone have old pictures from the Punch Bowl, Castle Rock Springs or Camp Houdd Gibson? Most importantly, who remembers being told why it was called the Punch Bowl? I'd love to hear the stories that aren't written down anywhere. I'll be visiting this soon before the heat is over. Beautiful Lake County CA, Keeping our local history and memories alive. 🌲💛
