The town of Micanopy is named after the Seminole "chief if chiefs" Micanopy who represented the Seminole people in 1821, when the town was established at the site of Wanton's Trading Post.

Today, a number of names of Florida cities and streets come from Native American names. This map in the Museum of Florida History shows some of the tribes present in Florida in the 1500s. Names like Apalachee, Pensacola, Mayaimi, Ocale, and Apalachicola are still used in some variation today. #NAHM
