🔨🪚 TOOL TIME WITH TOM 🛠️📏

Last week, our LAB Builders got hands-on with the fundamentals during “Tool Time with Tom” led by Locust Projects’ Chief Preparator and Director of Facilities Operations, Tom Mickelson.

From hammers and saws to impact drivers, levels, and tape measures, students learned the basics of working safely and confidently with essential building tools. 📐✏️ They practiced measuring, marking, and making their first cuts on scrap wood before putting their new skills to work building their own self-designed vitrines.

At LAB, learning happens by doing—and Tom’s workshop shows that a few simple tools can go a long way. 💪🪵✨

Explore Lost Shaker of Salt, an immersive exhibition by Patty Gone and Kelly Breez that asks: “What if Margaritaville is melting? What if it’s decaying? What if we are living in the ruins of Margaritaville?” Then experience A Bought Kingdom, Johanna Strobel’s exhibition that examines South Florida’s layered histories through stories of land, development, ecology, and the legacy of the extinct Dusky Seaside Sparrow.

🎉 LAB 2026 HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN! 🎨✨  The 16th edition of Locust Art Builders (LAB), our Summer Art Intensive for Teens, kicked off this yesterday 🚀  We’re thrilled to welcome this year’s cohort of young artists to LAB 2026 as they embark on five weeks of making, learning, and imagining together.💡🎨🤝 The space is already filled with energy, curiosity, and bold ideas and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes them.

Under the 2026 theme, “Build for Better” 🛠️🌎, students will focus on process, physical skill building, and socially conscious creative practices. Through an “analog to AI” approach, the students will use digital tools alongside hands-on fabrication, sculpture, and installation techniques to imagine and physically build the optimistic future they want to inhabit.  Throughout the program, students will learn from lead mentor Crystal Pearl Garcia (Crystal Pearl) and an incredible roster of visiting artists and creative professionals: stay tuned for recaps on the unique artist-led workshops👏🖌️  📅 SAVE THE DATE! From speculative role-play to secret Discord interventions, the final 🥒 𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘 @ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗟𝗟 of the season blurred the boundaries between digital and physical space 💻🎭

For the final DiLL of the 2025–26 season, artist-educator Fereshteh Toosi invited participants to step into speculative realities through live-action role-playing games exploring surveillance, digital systems, and the blurred boundaries between online and offline life. Through improvisation and collective play, the workshop opened up thoughtful conversations about how invisible technologies shape the way we move through the world.

The night concluded with Roxana Barba’s participatory performance secret group chat (beta test), transforming the DiLL into a live social experiment activated through movement, projection, and a secret Discord channel unfolding in real time.

Now in its 16th year, Locust Art Builders (LAB): Summer Art Intensive for Teens returns with the theme “Build for Better”, a five-week, hands-on pre-college program exploring sustainable art practices at the intersection of art, technology, and the environment. 🌎🛠️

Designed for Miami-Dade high school students interested in art, design, and creative careers, LAB offers professional artist-led workshops, studio visits, collaborative art-making, and behind-the-scenes access to Miami’s arts community, all while students work together to build an experimental exhibition from scratch at Locust Projects in our Main Gallery. Students start building day one!
