We celebrate 100 years of Mateo Manaure (Uracoa, 1926 – Caracas, 2018), one of the great architects of Venezuelan geometric abstraction. From his early expressionist studies in Caracas to the radical manifesto No with Los Disidentes in Paris, Manaure pushed art toward a new visual language of color, structure, and optical rhythm. His Bimural for the Plaza Cubierta at the Ciudad Universitaria, his lyrical Pinturas Sobremontaje, and the vibrant Cuvisiones reveal an artist who moved between abstraction, figuration, informalism with the same restless curiosity.

A century later, his legacy endures in the collections of the MoMA, the Galería de Arte Nacional, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Mateo Manaure in Maturín, and in the exhibitions we were honored to present at Durban Segnini Gallery: Saludo al tercer milenio (1996), Columnas Policromadas (2013), and Anthology (2021). Happy 100th, maestro.

Past Exhibition | Jeff Koons at Galería Durban, Caracas, 1980

Art for the Eighties was a group show that brought together 14 unaffiliated artists at Galertia Durban, caracas in 1980, and the catalogue makes a point of offering “no specific program or theme.” Figurative and abstract work, painting and sculpture, and things in between shared the room. What united them was that they all made objects, and that the objects stood on their own.

Among them was a young Jeff Koons, showing work from his series The New: fluorescent tubes and plexiglass enclosures displaying brand-new household appliances. The catalogue describes the enclosures as existing to show off the appliance’s newness. It is an early glimpse of the logic that would define his career.

The show also had a lasting consequence. Artist Meyer Vaisman saw it in Caracas, and years later, after moving to New York and opening the gallery International With Monument, he remembered Koons’s work and helped bring him into the downtown scene. Koons later recalled the show as an important link in that chain.

Trained as an architect, Ines Silva constructs each of her works with great precision, drawing on mathematical schemes in which the golden ratio, the
Fibonacci spiral, and Le Corbusier’s Modulor play a structuring role. Far from serving as a theoretical demonstration, these principles ensure a balance of form and establish a perceptible harmony between the work, its surrounding space, and the viewer’s body.

The artist’s preference for the constructive form of the column reveals a desire to deploy her work at an architectural scale. The verticality of works such as Column TNAB, poised on the frontier between architecture and sculpture, reveals—as they rotate or as we move—configurations that are forever renewed.

Explore the exhibition: Ines Silva Rhythms of Geometry.

Conceived with the aim of inhabiting a space with rhythm and dynamism, these works are open, visual propositions that actively engage the viewer, inviting them to move around and, at times, even intervene at the heart of their creative process.

The suspended works, float more freely in space (Jardín Colgante NE). As for the works of the Spiral Quadrata series, adorned with small mirroring surfaces, they fleetingly return the visitor’s image, integrating the viewer into the perceptual process. Ines Silva’s works never give themselves up at a single glance; each emerges in space and in time, to the rhythm of movement and interaction. The use of open forms and of transparent elements introduces a continuum between the inside and the outside of her works, between the perceived and the lived.

This year, Cesar Paternosto received the Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, including “Investigaciones tectónicas,” a new site-specific installation. In Buenos Aires this August, the MACBA opened “César Paternosto. La imaginación geométrica” curated by Natalia Giglietti. Paternosto’s continued recognizion with his work Duino (1966) included in MoMA’s exhibition Hard Edges, Expanded Fields. Collection 1950s–1970s.

For Durban Segnini Gallery we feel this is a long due recognition and our support for over three decades of studio visits, exhibitions, conversations, and a conviction we have carried throughout that his redefinition of the canvas as object belongs among the most significant contributions to Latin American abstraction.

Felicidades Maestro. All these years in and the work only grows more essential.

Ines Silva: Rhythms of Geometry

Ines Silva’s Plexiglas works stand out for their airy, luminous, and profoundly musical character. Reliefs, columns, folding screens, and suspended structures create a universe in which transparency, movement, and color transform geometry into a sensory experience. Trained as an architect, Ines Silva constructs each of her works with great precision, drawing on mathematical schemes in which the golden ratio, the Fibonacci spiral, and Le Corbusier’s Modulor play a structuring role. Far from serving as a theoretical demonstration, these principles ensure a balance of form and establish a perceptible harmony between the work, its surrounding space, and the viewer’s body.

A belated birthday tribute to Fernando de Szyszlo (July 5, 1925 – 2017). Born in Lima, Szyszlo was a pioneering figure in Latin American abstract art, known for his evocative fusion of surrealism and Andean cultural heritage. His work rich in symbolism, muted palettes, and shifting light drew deeply from Peru’s pre-Columbian past, including the textiles of Chancay and Paracas, as well as the myths, memories, and landscapes of the Americas. Szyszlo believed in art as a way of expressing truths from the unconscious universal emotions and ancestral visions rendered in abstract form.

With deep sorrow we bid farewell to Julio Le Parc (1928–2026) one of the defining artists of the twentieth century and a spirit of unrelenting conscience.

A founding member of G.R.A.V. and recipient of the Grand Prize for Painting at the 33rd Venice Biennale (1966), Le Parc dedicated his life to transforming the relationship between art and the viewer

We were honored to present his work in Caracas at Galería Durbán in 1979 — Julio Le Parc / Modulaciones — presenting a constellation of works with a catalogue text by Antonio Bonet Correa. The exhibition traveled to Barquisimeto and Maracaibo, the artist present at both inaugurations. An exhibition that still resonates in our memory and in the history of this gallery.

We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family, his companions, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him and we carry with us the certainty that his work, luminous and restless, will continue to move through the world long after us.
