SIDEWALK TALK:
The Street Art Movement in Wynwood and Beyond
What started with inscriptions preserved in Pompeii, and escalated in the urban neighborhoods of Philadelphia, New York and Los Angeles during the 1980s, has become a global phenomenon. Street art and graffiti are featured in films, fashion shoots and corporate advertisements, and sold at escalating rates in galleries and auctions. The murals throughout the Wynwood Arts District have helped establish its international identity, attracting fans of all ages year-round. Yet this widespread popularity, critical recognition and financial success raise thorny questions:
Where is the line between graffiti and street art, vandalism and commission, private and public?
Who has the right to remove artworks from where they were created, sell the originals or documentation, reproduce and circulate images in which they appear?
What space remains for homegrown street artists amid the international muralists increasingly drawn to Miami?
Art critic, journalist and curator Margery Gordon moderates a panel discussion and coordinates a tour with varied experts who offer insights about street art. Featured speakers include:
Marlo Courtney is the Senior Managing Director of Goldman Properties. He has been with the company for 30 years, for the last 23 years overseeing development projects in Wynwood and South Beach, where he worked closely with the company’s late founder Tony Goldman.

Daniel Fila, a.k.a. Krave, is a Miami-born artist whose work ranges from murals and paintings to animation and urban sculpture. His art can be seen on the streets of Wynwood and the exteriors and interiors of hotels, restaurants and other businesses from Miami to Palm Beach.

Dr. Paul George is a professor of history at Miami-Dade College who has published many books, curated exhibitions and narrated documentaries on regional history. For over 20 years, the native Miamian has led City Tours for HistoryMiami, including a walking tour of Wynwood and its street art.

Andrew Kaufman is an image-maker whose work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and publications. He is documenting the local street art scene in photographs and the books I'M IN MIAMI BITCH! The Disappearing Street Art of Wynwood (2013) andBASELGEDDON: A Novela, out this month.

Gregg Shienbaum exhibits street artists, emerging artists and contemporary masters at Gregg Shienbaum Fine Art, in Wynwood since 2011. He previously owned Verve Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, dealt blue-chip contemporary and Cuban art, and sold antiques at his family’s showroom downtown.

Margery Gordon writes about art and design for magazines, newspapers, websites and catalogues. Raised amid Miami’s developing art community, she is the founder and director of Arts Encounters, which organizes cultural tours, public programs, exhibitions and group travel.
