One of the leading figures of the Pennsylvania Impressionist movement, Edward Willis Redfield had an extraordinary ability to capture the changing seasons with remarkable energy and immediacy. Painted en plein air with bold, confident brushwork, 'On the Broadhead' embodies everything that makes Redfield's landscapes so enduring.
Rather than striving for photographic precision, Redfield painted the sensation of a place. Here, the snow-covered banks, rushing water, and historic stone bridge are rendered with thick, expressive strokes that convey the crisp light and quiet stillness of a Pennsylvania winter.
A native of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Redfield helped establish Bucks County as one of America's most important artistic communities in the early twentieth century. Today, his works remain among the most celebrated examples of American Impressionism.
