Lace up your sneakers and join the Miami Design Preservation League for our next Miami Beach Scandals walking tour next Thursday, June 18! One of our expert volunteer tour guides, Howard Brayer, will lead us.

One of the featured stops is the Essex House hotel (1001 Collins Ave.), designed by Henry Hohauser and completed in 1938.

Did you know that in the 1940s, guests who followed the subtle arrow and diamond patterns embedded in the lobby floor were led to a secret backroom casino? The hotel was also a favorite haunt of notorious gangster Al Capone!

This special tour is FREE and open to the public as part of Miami Beach Culture Crawl. The group departs at 6 p.m. from MDPL, located at 1001 Ocean Drive. The link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/miami-beach-scandals-walking-tour-tickets-1991393166568?aff=oddtdtcreator

If your plans change, please let us know in advance by emailing [email protected]. This way we can offer the spot to another participant. See you then!

In 1991, artist Noel Suarez created posters from one of his stunning paintings to sell at the Miami Design Preservation League and naturally, they sold out.

We’re excited to share that MDPL plans to make these posters available once again at the Official Art Deco Gift Shop.

We’ll be sure to share when they’re back in the near future.

In the meantime, come enjoy the first installment of Noel’s five-part public exhibition series, “Not a Retrospective.” The Art Deco Welcome Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1001 Ocean Drive.

Did you know that the first passion of Noel Suarez (photographed here with his darling Petra) was ballet? His talent for drawing, however, earned him admission to Havana’s prestigious Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro.

While performing as a professional ballet dancer, Noel also designed sets and costumes for the companies with which he worked, blending visual art with performance. At age 30, he retired from ballet to devote himself entirely to painting.

Deeply inspired by Tamara de Lempicka, a master of Art Deco figurative Cubism, Noel developed a distinctive artistic voice of his own. His work has been commissioned by private and corporate collectors, including Absolut Vodka and the cities of Boston, Miami and Miami Beach.

The Miami Design Preservation League is proud to present “Noel Suarez: Artist in Residence,” a five-part public exhibition series celebrating the nearly 40-year creative journey of one of Miami Beach’s pioneer artists.

The residency kicks off with an official opening on Thursday, June 4, from 6–9 p.m. at the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Drive on Miami Beach.

Join us for an evening immersed in Noel’s spectacular artwork and learn more about this one-of-a-kind residency. See you on Thursday!
