Hello everyone,
Here’s your morning piece from the Small Expressions 2024 exhibition.

7 of 33: “Cup and Saucer”
By Eden Quispe, Kansas

Artist Statement:
In this textile collage, steam from tea turns into a mini tornado...a flying saucer is a cup saucer...a woman wearing flowers in her hair attracts an enormous butterfly. Dali had the artist's knack of knowing how to see symbolism in the everyday. I like using my work to do the same, yet with everyday domestic items. By collaging doilies and handmade items, I hope to honor women whose knit and stitched items are all too often considered "low art”

Technique:
In this work, I created a piecework collage over an old quilt, including lace that was hand dyed red. I then added details with paint and quilt stitched red thread over the whole work with my sewing machine.

This exhibition was produced by the Handweavers Guild of American, Inc. (HGA). All works courtesy of the artists. This exhibition is made possible with support from the Fiber Trust.

Hello everyone! Here’s a morning dose of Small Expressions.
7/33 - “Challenge”
By Ann Enix, Kansas

Artist Statement:
Recently a friend saw some of my tiny baskets. She asked if I was still making tiny baskets. Over ten years have passed since I had made any tiny baskets. I challenged myself to see if at eighty-five my hands and eyes would still allow me to make the small baskets. Even though the basket did take longer, and I needed better lighting was delighted to see I could still make tiny baskets. Started the basket around one of my husband’s tie tacks with the back removed so will have special memories for me.

Technique:
Coiled basket technique using straight and solid wrap with beads added for interest and design integrity.

Materials:
Pine needles, glycerin, thread, beads, tie tack, faux leather.

This exhibition was produced by the Handweavers Guild of American, Inc. (HGA). All works courtesy of the artists. This exhibition is made possible with support from the Fiber Trust.

Hello everyone,
The 6th piece of Small Expressions 2024 Exhibit coming soon to Metuchen, NJ.

6/33: “Capricious”
By Annetta Kraayeveld, Montana

Artist statement:
What begins with a very traditional basket form quickly morphs into a whimsical paper vessel. Capricious.

Technique:
Watercolor paper painted with acrylics and cut into narrow strips. Hand shaped by weaving 2mm weavers over and under 3mm stakes. Vessel is rimmed with 6mm wide pieces and waxed linen.

This exhibition was produced by the Handweavers Guild of American, Inc. (HGA). All works courtesy of the artists. This exhibition is made possible with support from the Fiber Trust.

Daily dose of Small Expressions 2024
5/33: Blue Ink and Eucalyptus
Nanilee Robarge, California

Artist Statement:
My weavings express what I find beautiful and of interest, mostly images from nature and landscapes. I work with string and yarn to illustrate my experiences guided by initial photographs, and further experimentation with watercolors and collage. Lastly, I hone in on those areas that say “weave me.” My recent body of work is all from imagery collected on morning walks, mostly in Golden Gate Park. This work is made with wool and silk on an upright tapestry loom with yarns blended and used as my paint. I enjoy handling the materials and working within the constraints imposed by weaving cloth. While new to tapestry techniques, I am a long-time weaver, teacher, and artist, and this background supports my learning, continued creating, and the strengthening of my voice.

Technique:
Tapestry with supplemental warp, Soumak, and Eccentric weaves.

Materials:
Wool, silk, cotton on cotton warp
