On this day in 1939, The Wizard of Oz made its debut in theaters. It was based on the L.Frank Baum book written in 1900 - and the Stout children no doubt lost themselves in the magical land of OZ.
By 1938, when the La Pointe's were living at Wilson Place, one million copies had been printed.

The Art of Wonderment

An interesting video showing how different wallpapers are made! Wilson Place Mansion features quite a bit of flocked wallpaper - This shows you how it was made!

Continuing the theme of printed interiors - here's another gem from the British Pathé filmakers. This time in Greenford, Middlesex 1968, showcasing more large scale printing techniques.
Favourite section ~ how the flock wallpaper so popular in days gone by was created (sneeze, sneeze, and sneeze all the way home?!).

Lovely stuff ~ Enjoy :)

The 19th Amendment was passed on this day, August 18, in 1920. Eliza Wilson was very involved in the Suffrage Movement:

In the "Appendix of History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 3" edited by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony it says " Among those who sent most cordial letters of greeting, with request that their names should be enrolled in the centennial autograph-book as signers of the Woman's Declaration of Sentiments were: ...Eliza T. Wilson, Menomonie. "
Eliza was the first daughter of Captain William Wilson, First Mayor of Menomonie, and Co-Founder of the Knapp Stout Lumber Company.
We are proud to have Eliza's portrait hanging over our parlor fireplace, and to help preserve her amazing story.

A fun look at women's fashion of the 1880's. This would have been a prime time for fashion for The Wilson, Stout, and Tainter girls... There is a picture of Mabel Tainter wearing a dress with polka dots - VERY fashionable!!

The 1880s ushered in an era of tailored, close-fitting gowns, some of which were almost masculine in appearance. These gowns exemplified women’s changing roles in society. No longer content to be…

James Huff Stout and his wife Angelina Wilson Stout attended the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893 - The grounds for the fair were designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. They then hired Olmsted and his firm to design the grounds of their home, right here in Menomonie! This is a great documentary about the impact that Olmsted had on landscapes across the country.

To Olmsted, a park was both a work of art and a necessity for urban life. Olmsted’s efforts to preserve nature created an “environmental ethic” decades before the environmental movement became a force in American politics. With gorgeous cinematography, and compelling commentary this film presents th...

Below is Lucretia Mott a major organizer of the Seneca Falls Convention - which started on this day in 1848.

#OnThisDay in 1848 was the first day of the Seneca Falls Convention, organized by suffragists and reformers such as Lucretia Mott. As a Quaker minister, Mott used her religious convictions mixed with a progressive vision to bring about change, especially in the abolitionist and women’s rights movements. Mott attended the World’s Anti-Slavery Convention in England in 1840, where she, being a woman, was not allowed full participation in the proceedings. Mott was a major organizer of the Seneca Falls Convention and helped write the Declaration of Sentiments. She went on to help found Swarthmore College with other Quaker leaders, and founded a number of other charitable organizations in the northeast.
