The French gratitude train stopped in Medina Aug 28, 1950. They were sent to each state by a grateful French public. It includes things that war-torn French could part with -- drawings, dolls, historical gifts, musical instruments. Groups such as schools and orphanages sent letters of thanks. The boxcar could carry 40 men or 8 horses and was familiar to US soldiers serving in WWI. It was restored in 1988 and is at Camp Perry.

John Speer, editor of the Medina Democratic Whig, later the Gazette, went to Lawrence, Kansas in 1855 where he founded the state’s first newspaper. It was printed in Medina because printers there were against his abolitionist views. In 1863 pro-slavery guerillas burned the town and killed 150 men, including two of his sons. He became Kansas state printer, revenue collector, senator, treasurer of the Kansas Railroad Company, president of the Kansas historical society and author of several books.
