"Auspicious are the times and great the advancement
of the age towards developing the powers of the human
understanding. In every land, uncultivated man is a
fierce roaming savage, void of intellectual -improvement,
low and sensual in his habits, fierce in his resentment
and cruel in his ways. From this most abject state we
see him slowly rising through every gradation into
civilized life (from the savage horde to the most civilized nation on the earth,} being gradually governed
less by his animal propensities and more by his intellectual faculties. It is only when his mind becomes
enlarged and his fiercer passions quelled that he will
submit to society, to government and laws. The experience of all ages has shown that those dormant principles of the human mind must be brought gradually
into action before man can arrive at that state of perfection of which he is susceptible. In this state of progression we find ourselves advancing, looking forward
with hope, enlightened by the rays of science and im-
proved by intellectual exercise. As sentient beings it
becomes us to press forward with the means in our
