Improving Chautauqua County’s Housing Since 1978

42 Years of Excellence 1978-2020

Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corporation began in the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development in 1977 forty-two years ago. CHRIC became state's first "rural preservation company." CHRIC formed as a private non-profit with a voluntary board to carry out county housing initiatives.

CHRIC’s Budget is grant-based. An Annual Rural Preservation grant from NYS Homes and Community Renewal, Division of Housing & Community Renewal (DHCR) provides the basic administrative support, which allows the agency to secure program funding. CHRIC became a Chartered Member of NeighborWorks® America on February 25, 2003.

CHRIC has addressed the needs of thousands of housing units over the decades, both single-family homes and apartments. CHRIC has been able to help landlords make their rental properties lead-safe. CHRIC has provided assistance such as wheelchair ramps and handicapped modifications to bathrooms and kitchens which have allowed elderly and disabled people to stay in their homes. Without this work, many would have been forced to leave their houses.
