Land Between the Marshes | Building Schools

There were no schools in northeast Dodge County when the earliest pioneers arrived in the land between the marshes. Most settlers were scattered throughout the wilderness concentrating on survival for themselves and their families. Meanwhile settlements at Mayville, Theresa and Hochhiem were growing by the late 1840s.
In Mayville, the first school was organized in 1847. Classes were conducted in a private home until 1849. Out in the country, schools did not exist early on and parents “home-schooled” their children until schools were built. Most of the rural settlers were German speakers and tended to provide a faith-based education at home in the earliest years.
In 1849, Alvin, William and Edwin Foster donated land for a public square in Mayville. A public school was built and operated on that land for nine years. Foster’s Park as it came to be known was the center of community activities and public education for more than 120 years in Mayville.

📢 New Special Exhibit at the Mayville Limestone School Museum! 📢

We're thrilled to announce our latest special exhibit: "History of Lime Production in Dodge County" by Daniel Seurer of Lake Mills!

Step back in time with Daniel Seurer, whose fascination with lime kilns began in 1962 during a childhood adventure to High Cliff State Park. What started as a "blast" exploring kilns with his brother has evolved into a lifelong passion!

Daniel, a retired software sales engineer with degrees in archaeology and a member of the Wisconsin Archeological Society, has visited, researched, and photographed over 20 lime kiln locations across Wisconsin and beyond. His extensive knowledge is also shared in his co-authored, self-published books, "Kilns and Crushers," which delve into the history of lime production in Wisconsin.

Come and explore this exhibit featuring the rich history of lime production right here in Dodge County. You won't want to miss it!
