The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center is the world's largest Native American Museum and brings to life the story of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. Through multi-sensory dioramas and exhibits, we introduce visitors to the history of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the natural and cultural history of the Eastern Woodlands. Films, videos, interactive programs, archival materials,

ethnographic and archaeological collections, commissioned art and traditional crafts by Native artisans are featured in the exhibits.

Today marks 102 years since the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, the Snyder Act, which extended U.S. citizenship to Native people born within the United States.

For museums, cultural centers, and public history institutions, this anniversary is more than a historical milestone — it is a reminder of our responsibility to present these narratives with accuracy, depth, and respect. At the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, we work every day to ensure that legislation like the Snyder Act is understood not as an endpoint, but as part of a much longer story of sovereignty, survivance, and Indigenous self‑determination.

Moments like this reinforce why our exhibitions, educational programs, and community partnerships matter. They help visitors understand the lived experiences behind the policies — and the strength of the Nations who continue to shape this land.

Today marks the 389th anniversary of the Pequot Massacre at Mystic Fort, one of the most devastating attempts of genocide of the Pequot War. While there were several battles during this war, the attack at Mystic stands apart for its brutal and unprecedented nature, and it is remembered as the Pequot Massacre. On this solemn day, we honor the ancestors who lost their lives, while also remembering those who survived and carried Pequot people forward. Because of their strength and endurance, the tribe and culture live on today. We honor the Pequot community as resilient survivors, committed to preserving and honoring their legacy and continuing the battle against colonialism to this day.

Qutayanumuwee Puneesuwak (Honoring Our Warriors)

Today, we honor the sacrifice and memory of our fallen Puneesuwak (Warriors) and veterans who gave everything to protect our families, our homelands, and our freedom — a legacy carried forward from the Pequot War through every generation since.

On this Memorial Day, and every day, we hold deep gratitude for those who served and those who never returned home. Their courage continues to guide our communities, our stories, and our responsibility to remember.
