MUSEUM POLICY OF MASCOUTAH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Revised by the Executive Board on March 27, 2012

1. The Society must have clear title to all acquisitions. It will make no special agreements as to use or disposition of an object by the Society.

2. All acquisitions must be clearly related to the history of the Mascoutah area. Objects represented as related to specific events, places, or persons should be authenticated by documentation. Objects not related to specific events, places, or persons should be typical of an element in Mascoutah's history. Items which are merely sentimental, attractive, or unusual should not be made part of the permanent collection.

3. Acquisitions should be in good enough condition so that they can be useful to the museum without straining the financial or technical resources for preservation and exhibition.

4. The Accession Committee must have the authority to decide what to accept for the museum and how to use or dispose of what is not added to the collection.

5. The Accession Committee will obtain and use reference books to identify and evaluate objects so that it can choose wisely which objects to accept and keep. These books will become part of a permanent reference library in the museum.

6. The Accession Committee will not assign values to acquisitions. Proffer agreements will be given to the donor, with values based on the donor's valuation of the gift.

On your next trip to the Mascoutah Public Library stop and check out the display area in the main entrance. This month’s display features a cozy setting and many beautiful, handmade clocks from Roger Grodeon’s clock collection. These clocks were made in the mid to late 1800’s from one of 7 clock makers in Connecticut. The works are brass and steel and the cabinets are all wood in the Victorian style. This exhibit was created by Colleen Hoercher and Susan Yohe of the Mascoutah Historical Society.

The plans for the engraved stone marker for the Old City Cemetery have arrived! We are very pleased with the design that links both the old cemetery with the current city cemetery on Lake Road. We will be moving on to the next phase of establishing the placement and the constructing of the marker. This will be followed by a re-dedication of the cemetery.
If anyone would like to contribute to this historical event you may send your donation to:

Does anyone recognize this location? And do you know where it is?
This is the Old City Cemetery on the corner of South Street and Lake Street in Mascoutah. It is not a vacant or abandoned lot!
There are approximately 1,000 people buried here. Some are the families who originally settled and formed Mascoutah! It holds a history unique to our community. The Mascoutah Historical Society is in the process of marking this burial site.
What this is NOT:
It is NOT a dog park so please stop using it as that.
It is NOT a ball field or soccer field.
This is a cemetery and all rules, regulations, and respect should be given to those who are buried there and their families.
