CURATOR'S CORNER

Berkeley Count Historical Society has an excellent collection of Kilbourn Knitting Mill/Interwoven Mills objects and images. Today’s post features signs from the First Aid Room and Infirmary at the Mill. Pictured are three metal rectangular signs for “First Aid Room,” “First Aid Equipment,” and “Hospital Stretcher Here.” In addition, there is a green cross-shaped “First Aid Room” sign hanging from an iron bracket which must have originally hung outside of the First Aid Room. Be sure to see more images and items on display in the Medical Exhibit at the Museum at the Belle Boyd House, 126 East Race Street.

History of the Mill from earlier Facebook Post from October 14, 2017:

In 1890 - 1891, entrepreneurs from Philadelphia and New Brunswick, NJ invested money to build the country's first electric powered textile mill. Originally known as Middlesex Knitting Company, it became Kilbourn Knitting Mill after relocation of that mill from New Jersey after a fire. The company eventually became Interwoven Hosiery. It was the largest employer in Martinsburg for several decades.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Interwoven had outgrown its original building. By 1907, Interwoven had 2000 domestic accounts including some of the largest American retailers. Products were also sold door-to-door and shipped overseas. Branch plants had been opened in Hagerstown, MD and Chambersburg, PA by 1921.

Interwoven continued to thrive until the stock market crash of 1929. During the 1930's and 1940's, the company was confronted by organized labor as its employees participated
in the 1934 nationwide strike by the Textile Workers of America.

At this time, almost eighty percent of Interwoven's employees walked out. The company continued to operate with a skeleton crew. The strike did not resolve all the union's issues and again, in 1941, they walked out.

Interwoven manufactured socks for military personnel during World War II. In the 1950's, Interwoven faced competition both locally and worldwide. Employment dropped from more than 3000 early in the decade, to only 900 by 1960.

The company changed hands in 1962 when Kayser-Roth, Inc., purchased the Martinsburg operation and moved most of it to North Carolina. The Martinsburg complex was closed in February 1976, ending an important chapter of Martinsburg's industrial history.

The mill buildings are stilling standing at King, Porter, John Streets and Norwalk Ave. The Museum at the Belle Boyd House has an industry exhibit including Interwoven Mills, other textile mills and the histories of the various other industries in Berkeley County.

Looking to get out into nature this weekend. Yankauer Nature Preserve is open to the public with easy walking trails and is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 - 𝐘𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐮𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞
The pawpaw tree and its popular fruit call Yankauer Nature Preserve home. The pawpaw name is thought to have derived from the aesthetically similar Papaya. This deciduous tree ranges from Georgia to New York, and produces the largest native North American fruit. The Pawpaw fruit is a popular snack raw or as an ice cream additive! The oblong shape, custard textured inside, and banana-like-taste are just some of what makes this fruit unique. Pawpaw often grow in a patch that looks like a grove of multiple trees, when in fact this patch is actually biologically one organism, as the roots connect underground and the whole patch shares the same genetic information. Pawpaw’s unique dark red flowers attract your not so classic pollinators such as beetles and flies. Another special aspect of the Pawpaw is that deer are not interested in the fruit and avoid browsing on the branches, making it completely deer resistant! The pawpaw tree does not grow very large; a 30-foot specimen is considered quite big for a pawpaw. This is partially due to the fact that pawpaw trees’ growth is inhibited by direct sunlight, thus they have to be shorter than other trees in the forest. The best time to snack on a pawpaw is late summer once they’re ripe and begin to shower the forest floor. You wouldn't want to eat a fruit that’s too mushy, but, on the other hand avoid those that are still quite hard too.
As you hike throughout your preserve keep your eyes peeled for this sole domestic tropical treat

HOT OFF THE PRESS! The dates for the 17th Annual Historic National Road Yard Sale Have been changed to August 19-23, 2020 due to the COVID-19 virus. NOTE For future yard sale aficionados, the sale will be held from Wednesday through Sunday from Dawn Till Dusk. The Historic National Road Yard Sale extends for 824 miles from St. Louis to Baltimore all along the National Road also known as US 40. This iconic event will resume its traditional schedule of being held the FIRST Wednesday after Memorial Day. Not a yard sale fan? Then you might enjoy simply meandering along America's first interstate, sampling local food truck morsels (think an over sized well-dressed deep fried breaded tenderloin), visiting a local restaurant (think a slice of sugar cream pie which is also Indiana's state pie), kibitzing with local hiistory buffs, perusing small town antique shops, purchasing a Christmas gift in a specialty store, or spending a night or two in a bed and breakfast inclusive of classic architecture, or stopping to visit with Mr. Boos, aka the CEO/Canine Executive Officer of the Historic National Road Yard Sale. Speaking of Mr. Boos, he resides with his human, Patricia McDaniel, in the hamlet of Dublin, Indiana. This is the official headquarters of the Historic National Road Yard Sale which originated seventeen years ago way back in 2004. (Mr. Boos is a most humble canine. He'd never say that he was the featured guest on Sherman Burdette's Where's Sherman" in 2017. Mr. Boos and I conferred. He feels that it's great that there are no stirpes attached to the Historic National Road Yard Sale. There has never been a committee or official organization since the yard sale's inception. Mr. Boos abhors thinking that he must allocate two to three hours on the third Wednesday of each month recounting two to three hours of the previous month's meeting!! Mr. Boos does laud, however, the work each individual or organization on US 40 which contribute to making the Historic National Road Yard Sale a resounding success!! Please contact Patricia McDaniel at 765-478-4809. www.oldstorefrontantiques.com
