Good Morning Martinsburg! We are ready for you to begin this new journey with us. The website is updated with a list of vendors and links to place orders with them. Despite all the challenges, we are excited to be starting. We are very grateful to have several new vendors joining us this season.

This image post explains how the process will work. Our vendors are ready to take your orders! Hope to see you on Friday for order pickup!

Now! All this typing and planning is making us hungry! Let's all order some local goodies!!!

Christian Lopez

Christian Lopez (born August 1, 1995) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Martinsburg, West Virginia. His mother, an opera singer & music teacher, started him in piano at age of 5 and guitar soon after. He began songwriting in his early teenage years and touring shortly thereafter. In early 2014 at just 18 years old, Lopez signed his first record deal with Blaster Records. He recorded his first release, the five song EP Pilot, which was released in October 2014, followed by his first full length album “Onward” released in May 2015, both produced by Grammy Winning producer, Dave Cobb. (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Brandi Carlile)

Lopez and his band toured relentlessly on those releases, headlining their own shows and stepping out to support acts like Brothers Osborne, Jason Mraz, Miranda Lambert, Dave Matthews and many more. In addition, he also went on to win the Belk Modern Musician Showcase and earned multiple "Best Of’s" from Rolling Stone at AmericanaFest 2 years in a row.

In September, 2017, Lopez released his 2nd full length album entitled, Red Arrow, this time alongside producer Marshall Altman, known for his work with Marc Broussard and Frankie Ballard. Album features include Vince Gill (“Still On It’s Feet) and The Milk Carton Kids’ Kenneth Pattengale (“Caramel”) and studio legends like Stuart Duncan and Jerry Row, recorded at BlackBird Studios. Rolling Stone said that Red Arrow "flies straight through multiple eras of rock, pop and country. Organic sounds are favored over electronics, while Lopez's versatile guitar playing provides a millennial take on everything from Eighties rock to timeless folk. Sly, generation-bridging vocals are the common thread, and as interest in Americana rises, Lopez could connect the dots for many young listeners."

Since Red Arrow’s release & tours, Christian is now working out of Los Angeles with producer, Robert Stevenson (Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp, A Silent Film) In February, 2020. Billboard Magazine kicked off the first of what would be 4 new singles to be released over the spring in anticipation for a new album. Further details await.. Martinsburg Farmers Market

Hello market supporters, here are a few more details about how the drive-up farmers market is going to work. We'll update our website and use this page to make it as easy as we can to connect you to each vendor so you can support and fill your bellies and homes with local goodies.

1) Customers will place orders with individual vendors before the market. Many vendors have a way to shop online, and others are very happy to take your orders over the phone or via message. Some products require more notice than others, so the cutoff days will vary for each vendor.

2) Vendors will pre-sort and have each customer's order ready to go for Friday evening pickup.

3) When you arrive at the market, a volunteer will greet you. You will then be directed to slowly drive through the market so you can stop and collect your goodies from each vendor you have placed an order with. ALL SALES ARE PRE-ORDER. THERE ARE NO DIRECT SALES AT THIS TIME. :(

4) Go home and enjoy all your fresh local food.

5) Do it all again next week!

*For folks who live downtown and need to walk to the market to pick up. You must still pre-order. We will have a designated area near the information tent where the vendors and volunteers can collect your purchases for you to pick up.

We know this is a lot of extra hoops to jump through, and things will surely evolve and change as the weeks go by. We appreciate your support and understanding as we try our best to provide a farmers market and maintain as much safety as possible for vendors, volunteers, shoppers, and the neighbors that live beside our market.

Keep your eye on this page. We'll be sharing how to order for opening night in over the next few days!

One of #BerkeleyCountyWV's historic sites is the stone home of the founder of the town of #Martinsburg, Revolutionary War General Adam Stephen. Located in downtown Martinsburg, the house was constructed in the late 1770s to early 1780s period and furnished in the 1750 to 1820 period. It's now a museum. The house is open as a museum to visitors. Share a photo of a historic location you’ve visited in #AlmostHeaven with #PlaceIBelongWV.

Celebrate and remember.

REMEMBER WHAT MEMORIAL DAY IS ALL ABOUT

My teenage years were in the 60’s and early 70’s during the Vietnam War. I had a draft card number, but was never called to serve. Most from our community that were called to serve were several years older than me, a few the same age. No one knew why we were involved in this conflict that cost our nation over 58,000 lives. Most were young men in their late teens and early 20’s, in the prime of their lives. While in college, I never participated in any war protests, but many students across our nation did. I truly never appreciated our freedom as Americans until 1987, the year we took over the maintenance and operation of War Memorial Park. Forty years earlier our community leaders, purchased the park and turned it into a public park as a “living memorial” to the Berkeley County residents who gave the ultimate sacrifice during World War II and World War I. A maple tree was planted soon after in honor of each of those heroes. Many of those trees still stand today, some 70 plus years later and make this special place so beautiful (especially in the fall).

Since 1987, I have attended every Memorial Day program which is coordinated each year by our local chapters of the American Legion and VFW. In 2006, we built a new memorial in the center of the park above the bleachers and in view of the stage. With the special efforts of board member, Ted Morgan and Steve Ashton with Hammaker Memorials we raised $60,000 and built a new memorial with our fallen heroes’ names etched in granite. Those honored now include the names of those from more recent wars in our nation’s history as well.

Over the years, we have replaced many structures and facilities in the park. We replaced the Main Pavilion, the pool and bathhouse, the McKee Pavilion, the Norwalk Pavilion, renovated the tennis courts, covered the stage and replaced the bleachers, and added many new facilities. Of all the many projects we have done, the new “Memorial” was the one project that got the most attention, positive comments and support.

Over the years I have watched many family members of our fallen heroes sit for hours near the memorial and meditate and reflect on the sacrifice that was made by their loved one. Over the years I have grown a deep respect for those fallen heroes and appreciate very much the freedom we enjoy.
Because of the restrictions in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, for the first time in many decades there will not be a Memorial Day Program at War Memorial Park. The pool will not be open, playgrounds are still closed down, and our normal holiday activities will not take place. But please take time wherever you may be to reflect on our freedom and have an appreciation for those veterans that served in our military, those that are currently serving in our military, but most of all offer a prayer of appreciation for those fallen heroes that gave the ultimate sacrifice.

During these difficult times for all Americans, we still have much to be thankful for even though our lives have been impacted heavily by this pandemic. As individuals, we all have the freedom to choose how we handle adversity and difficult times. Regardless of how bad it might be, we will get through this and enjoy the freedom we have to celebrate this sacred holiday once again.

2020 Martinsburg Farmers Market Update....
#VisitMartinsburgWV #EatLocal

Good Morning farmers market supporters. We are moving forward with plans to open the downtown Martinsburg Farmers market in June. As you can imagine, things will be a little different this year.

We've been working hard to research what is working in other areas and having lots of conversations over the last few weeks on how we can safely have a market this Spring.

We're very excited to be able to provide you with another way to get delicious food and support local small businesses. We have several new vendors joining the market this season alongside your long-time favorites. We're feeling hopeful and optimistic despite all these challenges.

Our number one priority is the safety of our customers, vendors, and volunteers. As things become safer and a path forward becomes clearer, we will move towards a more normal market over several phases.

Here's a quick overview of what phase 1 will look like.

Phase 1: Pre-Order drive-through market.

• Vendors will take pre-orders and payments from customers during the week.

• Vendors will be set up spaced apart in our usual location on King street with signage on Queen street that says farmers market pickups enter here.

• Market volunteers will greet you, control traffic, and offer instruction and information to you.

• We'll let a few cars enter at a time to keep a steady and manageable flow of traffic so you can quickly and efficiently pick up from each vendor you have pre-ordered from.

• Walkups. For those who live and work in downtown, you will be able to walk to the market. We will be maintaining abundant and overly-cautious social distancing guidelines for your safety and the safety of the volunteers. When you arrive, a market volunteer will let the vendors know, and your items will be brought to a pickup spot near the market info tent.

This is just a glimpse. We have many details to work out and will be providing updates and more detailed instructions as we get closer to the market opening in June. We are shooting for June 5th, but, you know, we take it day by day these days.

Please be patient and kind as we try our best to work through this together. Our entire team are volunteers who plan and organize the market for the love of our community. We hope to be able to share that love with you again very soon.

–James

HOT OFF THE PRESS! The dates for the 17th Annual Historic National Road Yard Sale Have been changed to August 19-23, 2020 due to the COVID-19 virus. NOTE For future yard sale aficionados, the sale will be held from Wednesday through Sunday from Dawn Till Dusk. The Historic National Road Yard Sale extends for 824 miles from St. Louis to Baltimore all along the National Road also known as US 40. This iconic event will resume its traditional schedule of being held the FIRST Wednesday after Memorial Day. Not a yard sale fan? Then you might enjoy simply meandering along America's first interstate, sampling local food truck morsels (think an over sized well-dressed deep fried breaded tenderloin), visiting a local restaurant (think a slice of sugar cream pie which is also Indiana's state pie), kibitzing with local hiistory buffs, perusing small town antique shops, purchasing a Christmas gift in a specialty store, or spending a night or two in a bed and breakfast inclusive of classic architecture, or stopping to visit with Mr. Boos, aka the CEO/Canine Executive Officer of the Historic National Road Yard Sale. Speaking of Mr. Boos, he resides with his human, Patricia McDaniel, in the hamlet of Dublin, Indiana. This is the official headquarters of the Historic National Road Yard Sale which originated seventeen years ago way back in 2004. (Mr. Boos is a most humble canine. He'd never say that he was the featured guest on Sherman Burdette's Where's Sherman" in 2017. Mr. Boos and I conferred. He feels that it's great that there are no stirpes attached to the Historic National Road Yard Sale. There has never been a committee or official organization since the yard sale's inception. Mr. Boos abhors thinking that he must allocate two to three hours on the third Wednesday of each month recounting two to three hours of the previous month's meeting!! Mr. Boos does laud, however, the work each individual or organization on US 40 which contribute to making the Historic National Road Yard Sale a resounding success!! Please contact Patricia McDaniel at 765-478-4809. www.oldstorefrontantiques.com
