The Michelson Museum of Art was established in 1985 for the special purpose of accepting and caring for the life work of Russian-American artist Leo Michelson (1887 - 1978). Since then the museum has expanded to include the Gloria and Bernard Kronenberg Collection of early 20th century American art and the Ramona and Jay Ward Collection of African Masks and Chinese Opera Puppets.

The Art on the Edge opening reception was a wonderful evening filled with creativity and connection. Guests explored the powerful work of Latosha Keagy and Dylan Statler, each offering a unique and thoughtful take on contemporary art.

A live DJ and open art studio added to the energy, and a highlight of the night was watching Dylan Statler paint live—giving visitors a chance to see the artistic process in action.

If you missed the reception, there’s still time to experience the exhibition. Art on the Edge is on view through June 28, 2025. Make plans to stop by.

March with Michelson Day 30: Favorite Subject

Paris by Leo Michelson, 1927

Leo adored Paris, a fact made evident by the number of paintings in his collection that show off the beauty of the city. If he wasn’t painting the Eiffel Tower, he could probably be found painting the Seine. If not the Seine, then perhaps a storefront or the bustling streets seen from his Parisian studio. Leo ventured to many cities in many countries in his life, and while he enjoyed them all there was no denying that Paris was his most beloved home, and one of his favorite subjects. As our final day’s challenge, we present one of Leo’s fantastic paintings of Paris.

We made it to the final day of our art challenge! Whether you participated all month or every now and then, we thank every artist who followed along and created/showed off their art this month. Thank you for learning more about Leo Michelson and his beautiful and extensive collection with us. Don’t forget to come visit the Michelson Museum of Art in Marshall, Texas!

March with Michelson Day 29: Stranger

English Author’s Daughter by Leo Michelson, 1936

It is not uncommon for artists to paint or sketch strangers in their day to day life; whether through practice or commission, artists might find themselves working with unfamiliar faces. This young woman, only identified as an English author’s daughter, may not have been a stranger to Leo, but she is a stranger to those who see this piece. In a way, this portrait of a woman, with no documented name or story, is a stranger to the real woman that it depicts. What strangers do you capture in your artwork?

Marshall ISD has some incredible artists, and we love to show them off!

Last week, many Marshall Early Childhood students were recognized for their talents during their annual art awards ceremony. The Michelson Museum is proud to host this ceremony and proud to celebrate these young artists for their amazing work. 🎉

Yesterday, Price T. Young students came to the museum to see their artwork hanging in our public gallery. Mrs. Beth Aucoin picked work that represents each art class she teaches, and these pieces will be on display until the end of April. ✨

Be sure to come visit the Michelson Museum and help us celebrate these budding artists!

March with Michelson Day 28: Creature

Hyena by Leo Michelson, 1914

Have you ever played the mismatching game where you create a creature using different animal parts? While that exercise is often given to young students, it’s a fantastic practice for artists of all ages to encourage creativity, intuitive thinking, and to have fun! Leo may not have been using that exercise in the creation of this piece, but there is a certain whimsy here that reflects the mix and match activity. What kind of creature would you create?

March with Michelson Day 27: Quiet

House in the Snow by Leo Michelson, 1903

Every now and then we all need a little quiet place to sit and ponder without the weight of the world pushing back. Whether it’s tucked away under a bundle of blankets or out in the wilderness with the company of the sky, a moment of peaceful reflection or quiet meditation is the lesser known tool in the artist’s toolbelt. To capture that moment of serenity is not required, but is often inspired. Where is your peaceful corner of the world?

March with Michelson Day 26: Roses

Long Stemmed Roses by Leo Michelson, 1971

Completed some years after his independent showing in Paris, this piece exhibits Leo’s unique approach to painting. “Throughout my career,” Leo says, “ I’ve tried to make myself free by developing my own way to paint. The picture and how it wants to be painted suggests itself to me - it comes to me. If I approach it with a planned technique, it is dead.” Leo’s love for the subjects he painted and his patience with the process are no small part of what made Leo a master artist.

March with Michelson Day 25: Peak

Mountain in Switzerland by Leo Michelson, 1925

In this early artwork you can see how the foundation was being set for the phenomenal use of color that Leo developed in his later years. This piece highlights the skill that Leo had of stretching out of his comfort zone, learning from multiple masters, and incorporating his lessons over years of practice. While this piece was by no means the peak of his career, it shows us some of the groundwork that contributed to his success as an artist. In what ways do you hope to reach the summit of your artistry?
