USMC Lt. Presley Neville O’Bannon was born near Rectortown around 1776. This image of a historical diorama depicts O’Bannon, the first American to command US forces on foreign soil, raising the flag at the 1805 Battle of Derna, Tripoli (present day Libya), inspiring the phrase “to the shores of Tripoli” in the Marines’ Hymn.
