Welcome to Marion!

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the new staff members of Marion Central School to the museum!

What better way to get to know the students you’ll be working with than to learn a little about the community they call home? We enjoyed sharing Marion’s history with them—from where we started, to how our community has grown and changed, and what Marion has to offer today.

We love our community and all the wonderful people who make Marion such a special place. We hope our new staff members will come to love Marion just as much and feel proud to be a part of our community.

Help Us Identify This Harvesting Rig!

We would love to know more about this picture from our collection! It is simply labeled “Harvesting Rig,” but we’re hoping some of our knowledgeable followers can help us learn more.

What machinery are we looking at? What was it used for? Do you recognize the equipment, the people, or perhaps even the location? We would love to hear what you know and gain a little more insight into this photograph from our files.

Seeing as we are just at the beginning of harvest season here in Marion and the surrounding area, this picture seems especially fitting to share right now.

The mornings and evenings are getting cooler, the days are getting a little shorter, and before we know it, the kids will be back in school and fall will be just around the corner.

Apple Season is Here!

The early apples are starting to be picked, and before we know it, we’ll be in full swing of apple season here in Marion and the surrounding communities!

As we enjoy the sights and sounds of harvest season, it’s fun to look back at just how important apples and the fruit industry have been to our community.

Just look at this mountain of apples at the Vinegar Works plant in Marion, which once stood at the corner of Union and Mill Streets!

In the early 1900s, the Wayne County Produce Co. was a major part of Marion’s thriving fruit industry. Built around 1912 along the railroad, the plant purchased millions of bushels of apples from Wayne County farmers each year, turning them into cider and vinegar that were shipped across the country.

Known as one of the cleanest and most modern vinegar plants in the United States, the factory became a source of pride for the Marion community. After a devastating fire in 1923, the plant was rebuilt and continued operating into the early 1960s.

It’s amazing to think that the apples being harvested in our area today are part of a tradition that has been a big part of Marion’s story for well over 100 years!

Thought we would share a few more pictures of Hall Center from way back when!

The store pictured here was located in Hall Center and was also home to the post office. Sadly, we don’t have exact dates for when the store and post office were in operation, but based on the photos and architecture, we believe these images date back to the mid-to-late 1800s.

The second picture is a house we believe is still standing today. We included it to help show you exactly where the store was located. If you look closely, you can see the store sign sticking out from the porch on the right side of the photo.

We love finding these little glimpses into Marion’s past! Do you have any information about the store or post office? We’d love to hear from you!

Wow, what a fun day was had by all at the Marion Vintage Baseball Game!

A huge THANK YOU to all of our players, participants, and spectators who came out and made the day so much fun!

Thank you to the Town of Marion Recreation Department for getting a team together for us, and to the Marion Events Organization for providing FREE food for everyone at the event!

Another great day bringing our community together! We love seeing Marion come out and support these special events.

Marion Was Well Represented Today in Lyons!

What a special day for Marion history!

We were proud to be part of the Living History and Monument Dedication Day in Lyons, honoring those who served and sacrificed — including Judson Hicks, a Marion soldier who was killed at Gettysburg on July 2 while carrying our nation’s colors.

Marion was proudly represented today by:
🎤 Ainsley, who beautifully sang the National Anthem
🇺🇸 The Marion Color Guard
📜 Marion 5th graders, who did an amazing job reciting the Gettysburg Address

We are so proud of everyone who stepped up to represent our community and honor this important piece of history.

🧡🖤Marion pride was definitely on display today! What a wonderful way to remember our past and see our community come together.

Thank you to Wayne County Museum for the invitation and planning on this event!

FREE HOT DOGS TODAY!

Come join us at the Marion Town Park today! The Vintage Baseball Game is starting soon, with your Marion players taking the field!

And thanks to the Marion Events Organization, FREE hot dogs will be available for spectators while supplies last!
Come cheer on our Marion team, grab a hot dog, and enjoy a fun afternoon of baseball the way it was played in the 1850s — no gloves!

Game starts at 1 PM! Bring your lawn chair and come out to the park!

A Busy Day for Marion History!

Today is a busy day for the Marion Historic Association! We’ll be in Lyons for the Living History and Monument Dedication Day, where you can find us with a booth and learn more about Marion’s history.

We are also looking for Marion alumni or current students who would like to help us recite the Gettysburg Address at 1 p.m. What a special way to represent Marion!

This monument dedication is especially meaningful to our community because Judson Hicks, a Marion soldier who was killed at Gettysburg on July 2nd while carrying our nation’s colors, is among those being honored.

And then… head over to Marion Town Park for some baseball! Our Vintage Baseball Game starts at 1 p.m., with Marion taking on a vintage team from the Genesee Country Village & Museum, playing by 1850s rules — no gloves!

So today, Marion history is happening in two places at once!

📍 Lyons Central Park — Monument Dedication 10-5pm with dedication at 1pm
📍 Marion Town Park — Vintage Baseball at 1 p.m.

Come out, support Marion, and celebrate our history!
