🇺🇸 Labor Day Closure & A Little History 🇺🇸

The Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum will be CLOSED on Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day.

Did you know? Labor Day has been celebrated in the United States for more than 140 years. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City on September 5, 1882, and in 1894, Congress made the first Monday in September a national holiday honoring the contributions and achievements of American workers.

Here in western Kentucky, that history hits especially close to home. Generations of miners and their families built communities through long days, hard work, and determination. Much of the history preserved at the Clement Mineral Museum is also the history of the men and women whose labor helped shape our region.

This Labor Day, we remember and celebrate all those who rolled up their sleeves, went to work, and helped build the communities we call home. ⛏️🇺🇸

For those that want to hear first hand accounts from the entombed men of the 1926 Hudson Mine Cave In Rescue, here’s your video! At the end of this video you get to hear a song about the Hudson Mine disaster written by Mabel Ramage 16 years old at the time. Mabel was the sister-in-law of one of the trapped miners, U.B. Wilson. Song was performed by Cutter & Cash and the Kentucky Grass. They nailed it!

For those of you that missed the August 8th centennial celebration of the Hudson Mine Rescue of 1926, here is a recording of the aboveground rescue effort to get these men out alive! Bo Moodie is giving the presentation. He smashed it!
