Carved by Native Americans nearly 1,000 years ago and unearthed near Tolu in 1954, the remarkable fluorite figure remains one of the finest prehistoric stone carvings ever found in Kentucky. Its story stretches from the Mississippian culture to museums and private collections, with plenty of unanswered questions still surrounding its origin and significance.

This beautiful keepsake perfectly celebrates America’s upcoming 250th Anniversary by combining classic Civil War-era Crossroads and Churn Dash patterns in patriotic red, white, and blue.

🧵 Meet the Artisan: Marty Westgate
This masterpiece was handcrafted and generously donated by Martha “Marty” Westgate, a retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sergeant.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Marty dedicated 24 years to serving our country in the Marine Corps, deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, and Europe, and earning a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Intelligence. In 2003, she and her husband, Kenneth, set their sights on Western Kentucky for their future retirement and purchased land near Tolu.

After retiring from military service in 2015, Marty decided to channel her discipline into a creative new skill, taking a "Block of the Month" class at a local quilt shop. Today, she and Kenneth run Crossed Rifles Farm, raising 42 Kiko goats using regenerative pasture practices. In between farming, quilting has become her true creative passion. As Marty likes to say: “I wasn’t born in Crittenden County, but I got here as soon as I could.”

We have a new display in the Minerals of the District Room at the museum that you’re going to be dazzled by.

Everyone, meet Matt Barker!

Matt originally from southern California, is a Landscape construction project manger in Nashville Tennessee. He got inspired to learn how to facet from a single internet video on how to cut gemstones and thus began his Faceting journey in 2021 when he jumped straight in and bought an ultra tec v5 faceting machine. He loves to cut unique, rare and challenging gemstones to add to his collection and perfect his craft. He has the patience, precision and passion to create beautiful works of art to share with others.
