This week’s brings us to 100 Pleasant Street circa the 1920s–30s. The Goss-Osborne Building stood at the busy corner of School & Pleasant Streets surrounded by delivery trucks.

The building housed the popular F.N. Osborne Co. Inc. “Choice Groceries & Provisions,” where residents could shop for groceries, fruits, and vegetables along the School Street side. After Prohibition was lifted, the Osbornes also opened a liquor store on the Pleasant Street side. With the slogan “We lead, others follow,” Osborne’s became a Marblehead staple for generations and remained a local institution until closing in the 1980s. The building was also home to the T. Mulcahy Barber Shop, while the second floor housed the Marblehead Health Department and an insurance office.

Now home to local businesses including two dental practices, James U. Rice and Yvette Glina, and Flagship Travel agency.

Happy National Hamburger Day from the Marblehead Museum! 🍔

No burger photos in the archive, but we did find something that still feels fitting for National Hamburger Day: a moment of outdoor cooking along Marblehead’s rocky coast from October 14th, 1898.

Before backyard grills and burger chains, there were seaside fires, cast iron, and whatever you could cook over an open flame. Fred Litchman sits on the right, with a small fire or grill between them. A rocky cliff rises behind them, with “A.C.” carved into the stone.
