Frozen Charlottes were small, jointless porcelain dolls popular from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. They were simple, affordable, and often called “penny dolls” because of how cheaply they were sold. But behind their innocent appearance is a haunting story. The dolls are named after Fair Charlotte, a folk ballad based on a poem by Elizabeth Oakes Smith. It tells of a young woman who, on her way to a winter ball, refused to cover up her beautiful dress—choosing vanity over warmth. Tragically, she froze to death during the sleigh ride, never making it to the party, and immortalized in these tiny dolls.

It's the last weekend of regular tours of the Hubbard House! Stop by Friday or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Last tour begins at 3 p.m. Admission charged.

The stage is set for the Old Fashioned Medicine Show today. First performance is at 1 p.m., but don’t fret if you can’t make it then. There are additional shows at 2 and 3 p.m. There’s also no cost to attend, just bring yourselves and maybe a lawn chair!
