Southern Minnesota Mid-Century Music

In Jim Oldsberg’s book “The Flip Side: An Illustrated History of Southern Minnesota Rock & Roll Music from 1955-1970,” he chronicles the prolific era of local music in and around Mankato. According to Oldsberg, southern Minnesota saw a surge in the number of local bands at this time due to its location, venues and radio stations. “Southern Minnesota had its own distinct recording scene (Joel recording in Mankato, Lynn recording in Rochester, and UA studio in Winona); a unique sound that was a blend of Minnesota, Kansas, South Dakota and Iowa influences; and an entire set of youth centers, National Guard Armories, fairgrounds, and numerous ballrooms of which it called its own.” In addition, local radio stations played a crucial role in giving exposure and airtime to these local bands. KNUJ in New Ulm and KYSM in Mankato both provided a platform for emerging musicians to showcase their talent and reach a wider audience. Oldsberg’s book highlights 41 bands, but surely there were many more that live on in our memories. Come in and see all the fabulous stories in: “Music and Memories” now on view at the History Center.

Over the years, Durenberger has played with several local bands like the Buffoons, Living Proof, City Mouse and his own Paul Durenberger Band. His virtuosity on the piano, coupled with his keen sense of musical expression, has earned him recognition and a local fan base. The BECHS archives house R. L. Polk & Co. City Directories for the years 1892-2014.
The structure of directories changes over time, but they consistently include a directory of businesses, an alphabetical directory of residents and businesses, and an alphabetical directory of farmers. Starting in 1929, they also have a directory of householders—also known as the “reverse” directory—which is organized by street address.
City directories are great resources for family history and house history research. Browse the collection’s finding aid online and stop by the History Center to view the directories.
