Today, we come together in unity to commemorate Memorial Day. We pay tribute to the brave heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Their valor and dedication will always be remembered. Let's pause to honor the service members and their families who carry the burden of their loss. May their memory be a source of comfort, today and forever.
A Moment to Reflect:
In 2000, Congress approved the National Moment of Remembrance Act. This legislation encourages all Americans to observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m. (local time) or to listen to “Taps”. It serves as a meaningful way to honor and keep these soldiers close to our hearts.

This beautiful hand painted glass tumbler was recovered from the Ephrata Cloister archaeological site (36La981) in Lancaster County. It was likely produced by the American Flint Glass Manufactory opened by Henry William Stiegel in Manheim, Pennsylvania in 1764 and features the traditional red, yellow, and blue colors, German writing, and German motifs such as the turtledove that were often used on Stiegel’s pieces.

Although the turtledove (or turteltaube in German) was a common theme of Ephrata Cloister during the days of its enigmatic leader Conrad Beissel, this glass is an interesting find from the site due to its bright colors and ornate decoration. The cloister’s inhabitants were known for their strict religious lives of celibacy, communal existence, and lack of personal possessions. It may be that the glass was brought to the cloister by an outsider or following Beissel’s death in 1768.

"Happy Fourth of July! Celebrate safely with your loved ones today. Did you know that the iconic figure of Uncle Sam was first used during the War of 1812? The most cited origin story traces Uncle Sam back to a man in Troy, New York. Sam Wilson delivered meat packed in barrels to soldiers during the War of 1812. Wilson was a well-liked and trustworthy man in Troy, and local residents called him "Uncle Sam." When people around town saw those supply barrels marked "U.S." they assumed the letters meant Uncle Sam, and the soldiers adopted the same thinking. In reality, Wilson had labeled the barrels "U.S." for "United States," and so the two ideas merged—Uncle Sam became a symbol for the United States of America. He represented the United States government and became a symbol of patriotism and national identity. So, wave your flags proudly and enjoy the festivities!"
